I've been meaning to check out Emcke's book already, since it sounds pretty interesting, but now even more so.
And yeah, no discrimination for being queer is unfortunately still pretty much a pipe dream, although naturally it can always be worse (case in point, Russia - or the article I read a while back in the Zeit about gay refugees, who not only faced repression in their country of origin, but often get attacked by other refugees in hostels: the young men who were interviewed all said they felt they weren't discriminated by Germans for their sexuality, because what they're used to is so much worse). Still, the things people say when they don't know you're queer or queer friendly paint a less than pretty picture, from the simply ignorant and accidentally offensive to downright hateful stuff.
