One of the things that has always disappointed me about the more fanatical Star Trek fandom was always their apparent fear of having to make a choice. That they have an idea that Star Fleet personnel should have evolved beyond making choices and thus always automatically do the right thing. Whereas for me it's the choice that is always important. The choice to maintain the higher standards that you have set for yourself, when it could be so easy to take the easier route and compromise. It's what has always marked the superior Star Fleet officer, such as Saru.
