Oh, I think the movie is a great mixture of method and content. I mean if they'd chosen, say, Monet, the result certainly would have been beautiful, but not as moving, because nothing as terrible ever happened to Monet, and he lived a long, creative life with ups and downs and eventually much success.
Re: crying - most version of Van Gogh's story break my heart a little, but I think the only time I've had tears in my eyes was, oddly enough, in the Doctor Who episode.
