I see what you mean about race-related unfortunate implications, but I don't think that's the reason for Gillen's performance. My issue with him wasn't just that he was unlikable, but that he was one-note. He could have been unlikable but still interesting - honestly, Salieri is often unlikable but he's incredibly compelling. I think Gillen's performance, while showy, was not good.
