One thing I just thought of about your bemusement on the increased shippiness of Crais/Aeryn - I suspect it's not so much a sexual attraction as that Crais is a man who deeply wants to be part of a family, and he has rosy ideas of forming one with himself as father, Aeryn as mother, and Talyn as their child.
