My first Dickens was David Copperfield, and I haven't found there a film version that truly satisfied me, either - including the latest one, inventive fun as it was - so I think it's really the - inevitable - problem (for me, not millions of watchers) is that film shows the (usually melodramatic) plots but loses the richness and wit of the prose. But a recitation keeps it!
