(I don't know whether you ever saw the tv recording of Macbeth with Ian MacKellen as Macbeth and Judi Dench as Lady M., from the 70s when all those wonderful actors were with the RSC. Anyway, the relationship between the Macbeths is played as intensely sexual, not via nudity, just via tone of voice, body language and magnetism, and the knowledge that IRL Sir Ian is gay does not take away one percent of belief when one is watching this.)
