As others had already mentioned, this was a good enough backstory that it should indeed be cannon. From their phone converstation and meeting, you get the feeling that Meredith and Nathan were more than just a one night stand. Liked the Linderman touches in there too. As with the DL/Niki relationship, Nathan/Meredith could have been set up that way too, to make another special person.
