Oh absolutely, and in films like Transamerica, you have a female actress playing a pre-op transsexual as well in an utterly believable way.
Re: Bellino - when watching it the first time, I also thought it was better done than the equivalent scene in Victor/Victoria, because in the later they had James Garner's character find out Victor(ia) is a woman first and THEN declare he doesn't care etc., knowing already what she was, whereas here Casanova doesn't know and gets to the point where he honestly can say "I don't care". And as you say, the actress would have been completely believable as a genuine castrato, too.
