Ashes to Ashes 2.05. and 2.06

Two okay episodes, not spectacular but with good character moments.

Bullet point impressions, due to Darth Real Life breathing down my neck.

- I wish [personal profile] jesuswasbatman had been right with his The Third Cop = Luigi theory, because so far Martin Summers is just standard villain 101

- I recognize a reverse set up when I see one; Sam first cooperated with Frank Morgan in order to get back, then at the last moment changed his mind; Alex refused to cooporate with Martin Summers, which means she'll change her mind (though probably twice) later in the game

- Alex and her teenage future ex were absolutely priceless in their scenes together, because it was such an ex reaction, and the boy's response to it was perfect

- also, if I were Alex and found out my future ex named our daughter after his cat, I'd blame George Lucas and Steven Spielberg because of the Indiana Jones precedent

- didn't see the Gaynor=George (spelling?) revelation coming but I should have, and it was well done, especially her confrontation with Gene and insistence on him using her name

- the scenes with Ray and his conflicted response were excellent, too, which brings me to the next episode and

- last season the episode where Alex has Ray go undercover in a gay bar made me wonder a bit whether the show would actually do a coming out of the closet storyline with Ray, because it would fit with the early 80s, and Ray's the best candidate; Chris is mostly comfortable with himself, and Gene's too old. Now the latest episode really hints heavily in this direction, between Ray's Valentino reference, his usual overemphasis on calling others "poofters" and Alex calling him repressed in her letter.

- though I disliked Alex' increasing acceptance of and concurrence with the beat-up-the-suspects routine in 2.05., I do like her scenes with Ray there and in 2.6.; it's an odd kind of apprenticeship (whereas Sam apprenticed Chris), and the fact that despite having jealousy issues with both, Ray actually gets along better with Alex than he did with Sam fits my coming-out-storyline theory

- Alex: thinks ahead. Loved the fact she has farewell letters for all of them in case she makes it back to the 2008 world, and was very amused everyone except for Gene did read them already

- Chris and Shaz continue to be the cutest cop couple on tv bar none.

- if we're supposed to think Gene is right with his idea that beating up suspects is okay while taking bribes is a crime, I have one more thing to headdesk about.
