Art post - Daredevil

I've been spending the summer learning how to draw! I've always wanted to and I figured why not now. I'm having a blast with it, and I feel like every drawing I do I get a little better.

I decided to try and draw something fannish this weekend, so here's Daredevil, in charcoal!

It was a Saturday.

Things I did yesterday:

- got stabbed repeatedly before a nap (acupuncture)
- almost died (flash rainstorm/winds as I drove over the Lemont bridge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Des_Plaines_River_Valley_Bridge) surrounded by semi’s and suv drivers who do not understand rain)
- ate reasonably decent sushi to celebrate a friend’s bday!
- observed a law enforcement situation in a fenced parking lot while going to drink tea in front of a pizza oven
- got lost going to my bank (but found it!)
- was reminded that driving on the Bishop Ford and the south bit of the Dan Ryan is a competitive sport likely only replicated in New Jersey
- took the incorrectly intended exit and got reminded that The Salt Shed is a fucking bad idea (Christ)
- picked up my cat order @ the pet supplies and did NOT ram my car into the idiots at the hellscape that is six corners in that area (I want answers, city planners!)
- did five loads of laundry but forgot three shirts and my specially commissioned socks in a dryer because I was there until 8:59pm and didn’t do a last check
- hanged dry the load that was in the shitty dryer that didn’t work and put the rest away
- fell asleep in my recliner while watching an episode of Make Some Noise and woke up at 2am with all my lights on and Wink yelling at me for snacks

Things I did today:

- went back to the laundry with three MORE loads and found my shirts and socks where I left them
- cleaned out my fridge and took out the trash (jfc, that was a journey)
- ground coffee for the month
- did two loads of dishes
- put the duvet cover on the newly washed duvet ON THE FIRST TRY
- put freshly washed bedding on, put away all my fresh laundry, and tidied the bedroom
- deep cleaned the sink and put in a load of dishes
- put orphan appliances back in their closet space
- ate carrots and consumed too much coffee

Celebrate your wins, right? 🎉

Fortune Wheel 02.25: Playlist Week 11

And here you find this week's playlist.

Short reminder:
You can post unlimited works, but the total weekly regular points are 15.
You don't have to use both prompts, but you can reach maximum points by using one prompt only.
The lucky color can bring some extra points when following some special rules (optional!)
The color is always connected with the given prompt (color 1 belongs to prompt 1 / color 2 belongs to prompt 2)
You can earn extra points once for each prompt.

Color blue = write a fic in first person or create three icons with a plain blue background
Color orange = write a crossover or create a graphic work based on two different fandoms
Color yellow = write a 'dialogue only' ficlet or create two 'text only' graphics bigger than an icon
Color white = write an poem (haiku is fine) or create two icons based on any RL character(s)
Color green = Joker: you will earn five extra points for free
Color red = Zonk: you won't earn any extra points for the connected prompt

Complete rules/points H E R E

If you want to participate in the team challenge (even if you didn't sign up, feel free to join as a joker at any time), go H E R E

Don't forget that you have three wildcards to swap a prompt for any from your prompt list. The lucky number remains unaffected!

Catch up
Some participants have missed posting last week. They are marked with 'catch up' in the list.
For this week your maximum points increase from 15 to 30.
You can use each lucky color twice to earn some extra points (Joker excluded!).

Hiatus List
Participants who have missed more than three weeks in a row will be moved to the hiatus list. Don't worry, this is only to keep the playlist easier to handle. You are more than welcome to jump back into the game at any time.

Posting for this week officially ends Sunday, July 27 17.00 UTC. There is a grace period until the week is finally called 'closed'.

In which a woman in Kent was threatened by armed police for lawfully being in public

- The nation state of Israel's genocide of Palestinians in Palestine continues.

- In the UK there continue to be large peaceful pro-Palestinian protests, including a march in Edinburgh attended by thousands of supporters.

- Led By Donkeys released a video explaining that the "charity" UK Lawyers for Israel hosted a far-right Israeli MP who has subsequently been sanctioned by the UK government for supporting genocide, and that the uncharitable wing of UK Lawyers for Israel continues to use vexatious legal bullying to attempt to erase Palestinian culture from multicultural Britain including shutting down a children's kite-making meeting by claiming it was akin to terrorism. Some people would call this "ethnic cleansing" and "cultural genocide" of Palestinians. A previous mention of vexatious claims by Lawyers for Israel that failed to remove a public art work.

- Led By Donkeys previously made
a 6min video about intentional destruction of our right to peaceful protest in the UK by authoritarian politicians such as Keith Starmer (who is handing the next election to Farage on a plate complete with fascist garnishes).

- In the UK over 220 people have now been arrested and could be imprisoned for 14 years as "terrorists" for holding signs saying things such as, "genocide in Palestine, time to take action" and "I oppose genocide, I support Palestine action".

- One woman in Kent was threatened with arrest by armed police for standing in public displaying the sign "Free Gaza" with a Palestinian flag: "It’s terrifying, I was standing there thinking, this is the most authority, authoritarian, dystopian experience I’ve had in this country, being told that I’m committing terrorist offences by two guys with firearms." The police officers are on vid saying, "We could have jumped out, arrested you, dragged you off in a van." Kent Police issued a statement supporting the illegal actions of their armed fascist officers.

- Multiple legal British organisations with "Palestine" or "Palestinian" in their names have had their bank accounts frozen by multiple banks with no explanation. Some of these orgs send aid to Gaza, amongst other legal activities.

- Article, posted here for archiving purposes, from Scottish newspaper The National:

I'm a journalist covering Palestine Action arrests. This is all absurd.
By Laura Webster, 18th July

archive )

None of it makes any sense to me, or our team.

The people doing the killing and destroying face no consequences. The people raising the alarm are taken away in handcuffs.

I wonder how many arrests our reporters will witness before the UK decides to take real action against Israel?

If this really is the new normal, Scotland shouldn't have anything to do with it.

Challenge #6

Journaling prompt: What games do you play, if any? Are you a solo-gamer or do you view games as a social activity?
Creative prompt: Write a story/fic around the theme "game night".

I'm not a video gamer at all, and while board games can be fun I never went out of my way to play them. My nephew, on the other hand, is really into games of all kinds, so every time he and my family visit we've always played board games. Apples to Apples is a fun game and probably my favorite. Uno is fun, too, but depending on who you're playing with, it can be frustrating, lol (my father's wife once played with us and she was the most annoying person ever to play the game with - she was a generally a terrible person and there are worse, more serious examples than Uno, but I digress, lol). I also enjoy crossword puzzles and quizzes, which tend to be a solo gaming thing.

Sporcle has some fun quizzes, so I try those out sometimes. I like the enormous crosswords best, but there are all types of quizzes there.

overcast

And cloudy - that's this morning and it's lovely. I'm beginning to notice incremental day shortness. It's still light at 5 am but not like it was last month. It's still light at 9 pm but not like was last month. Progress.

Yesterday was just a lovely day of OMG-I-am-so-lucky-to-live-here. It just slaps me upside the head sometimes in the most wonderful way.

Today I had nothing on the agenda until I got a text from Richard (one of my volleyball buds and husband of Martha) asking if I would be willing to take him to Costco today to get a new battery for his car. Happy to. He says it will take an hour. Richard is one of those guys who has his own way of doing things and that is coupled by his extreme thrift. He spent his life teaching and then managing teachers of special education. In fact, turns out, one of the teachers he managed years ago, was Jan - the woman who just moved into Myrna's apartment!

So I'll meet him out at the elbow at 10. He has exceedingly long legs. It will be fun to watch them fold into the Smart Car.

Last week, when I took Martha to Fred Meyers, we stopped at Krispy Kreme and I took some mini donuts to elbow coffee. Everyone oood and awed at the donuts and I explained that they had Martha to thank and then they oood and awed at Martha "you got to ride in the little car???!!!" It was pretty funny.

We'll be home in time for baseball. The Mariners beat Houston in a walk off long after I was asleep.

Guess I'd better get dressed. And I need to put in a load of laundry and unload the dishwasher.

The Beauty Way

Ever since watching that one Yonghee & Hyunsuk performance that made me go feral for them, I have fallen for CIX. Technically I have been a fan since their most recent comeback with Thunder, one of my favourite k-pop songs ever, but now I also have a ship and a bias (Yonghee) and a biaswrecker (Hyunsuk).

And here is the point of no return: I am watching their vlogs and having Feelings.

When they all visit the sea and a dripping Yonghee revenges himself on Hyunsuk by catching hold of his legs to flip him into the water, Hyunsuk stands up drenched, and they hug. It's the sort of hug where you can't tell whether Yonghee initiated it or Hyunsuk, but their arms around each other enclose my heart, making it squeeze with affection, assuring me of much to daydream about these two. Later, at their hotel, Yonghee plays the flute while Hyunsuk reads aloud, bits of prose that sound like poetry, and the moment passes, but the feeling doesn't. The feeling persists, like a floating bubble, when Seunghun asks Hyunsuk to pass him the book he was reading from, only to place it under his head as a pillow. Yonghee jokingly tells Hyunsuk to keep the book ready as a coaster when they make ramyeon. I love this feeling, warm and fuzzy around the edges, floaty, big enough to burst.

They're already on their six-year anniversary, so their contracts will likely expire at seven. I'm melancholy.

I Set The Death Note Down, Start Walking Away, Then Turn Back.

I promised myself I wouldn't make any more websites. I always make the structure too elaborate! They're so time-consuming!

And yet they're also so much fun.

Welcome to Kira's Tokyo, my brand new Death Note website! Mainly consisting of my rambling about Light Yagami, because, wow, I have a lot to say about Light Yagami.

As with my websites for Final Fantasy VIII and Silent Hill 2, much of the text originally comes from my posts on this blog, so parts of the site will probably sound familiar if you've read my previous Death Note rambling! I hope it's fun to see my thoughts presented in this new format, though.

Weekly proof of life: books (reading and ordering thereof), inc. an audiobook | A bounty of berries

Reading: Mostly non-fiction last week, oddly. Still slowly reading through An Everlasting Meal, as well as flipping through a couple of new cookbooks in hard copy*. I also started reading Maureen Ryan's Burn It Down: Power, Complicity, and a Call for Change in Hollywood.

As for fiction, I started--brace yourself--listening to an audiobook. I don't really do audio formats at all! But [personal profile] scruloose has never read Murderbot, and the audiobooks seem to be WIDELY beloved, so I thought maybe we could follow Kas and Ginny's example and listen to one or more of those together. So I borrowed All Systems Red from Hoopla (another first for me), and yesterday we listened to the first three chapters or so. (I highly doubt I'm going to take up non-music audio media in any meaningful way, but who knows? Three chapters was definitely not enough to make it stop feeling weird, though.)

*A small order from Book Outlet contained What Goes with What: 100 Recipes, 20 Charts, Endless Possibilities (Julia Turshen); Half the Sugar, All the Love: 100 Easy, Low-Sugar Recipes for Every Meal of the Day (Jennifer Tyler Lee and Anisha Patel), which crossed my radar early on in the "must keep an eye on blood sugar" process and stuck because it doesn't use any artificial sweeteners (since I've never met one I didn't hate); Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End; and the first and third installments of the Murderbot Diaries consolidated editions, which means I now own books 1, 2, 6, and 7 in hard copy.

Not sure if I'll just keep an eye out for the second volume to turn up there too or if I'll cave and just buy it. I'm glad there's a release that combines novellas! But I'm also eyeing the hard copy option for Network Effect and wondering if there's going to be a release of it that matches this set. I like all the original covers, but I also like my physical books to match. (Does anyone know if there's any plan for a matching rerelease?)

(Am I still grumpy that--unless something's changed?--it seems like the first three of Wells' Raksura books got released in mass market paperbacks, which I pounced on because that's my preferred format, but the fourth and fifth didn't? YES.)

Cooking/Baking: Mid-week, [personal profile] scruloose picked up some strawberries that tasted and looked fine but had a slightly odd texture (kind of...mushy? But nothing was visibly wrong?), so we turned most of them into this Buttermilk Blueberry Strawberry Breakfast Cake. It was tasty enough, but not so tasty that I immediately understood why it's one of the two most popular recipes on the site; that said, in addition to swapping the berries, we didn't have fresh lemon zest on hand and used the granulated peel from Silk Road (and also, my impression is that while blueberry and lemon are an iconic flavor pairing, that's not true of strawberry and lemon) and did the vinegar-in-milk substitution for buttermilk. So who knows.

Yesterday [personal profile] scruloose had to go downtown to one of the large markets because that's the only place our usual meat guy vends and we'd placed a fairly large order (sadly, to replace one from a few weeks ago that met a tragic end by not getting put into the freezer soon enough). But en route, they stopped at the little corner market and got two containers each of raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries, plus some new potatoes. So now we are SWIMMING in berries, which is a wonderful state of affairs. I imagine there's no way we'll make it through all of them by just eating them straight, so we'll see what we wind up doing.
