Oops I did it again

Instead of doing housework, I made one more pair of crotalia-style earrings today. I remembered having an old 3-strand necklace clasp in my hoard and I was able to locate it. After that it was a matter of choosing the rest of the bits. I decided to do something more like the originals, so I used white freshwater pearls, brass wire, and some gold coils meant to go on custom earwires. Those have got to be 45-50 years old, from when Aged Mum and I were learning jewelry making from booklets we bought at Grieger’s. I guess being a packrat comes in handy sometimes, but I sure feel ancient.

Daily Happiness

1. I'm pretty much over my cold. Nose was a little runny this morning, but I'm not stuffed up anymore. Still tired from not getting enough sleep, but maybe tonight will be the night? (Maybe not, though, since I was so tired this morning I bought a coffee when I got to work and then a Coke at lunch. Even though that was early in the day, it still might keep me up...)

2. I'm very glad tomorrow is Friday and it's the weekend. We're going to see Adam Conover live on Sunday, so that will be fun. (It's at the same venue where we've seen Paul F Thompkins a couple times, and Carla was browsing their upcoming acts a couple months ago and spotted it.)

3. Speaking of Sunday activities, the last Sunday of the month is our Oogie Boogie night, so I just remembered to put in a PTO request for that Monday. It only runs until 11pm, not like some of the nighttime events on the Disneyland side (DCA ones always start and end earlier), so it wouldn't be terrible to have to go to work the next day, but it's just a nice excuse to have a day off. And I do need to use up some more of my PTO balance or it will max out again before we go to Japan next year.

4. Tuxie's challenging me.

Promise to be dazzling

Right now, I am just sitting here waiting for Taylor Swift's new album to come out. This is one of those evenings when all I feel capable of doing is sitting and scrolling semi-mindlessly. In anticipation for the new album, I am listening to The Tortured Poets Department again. I loved it so much when it first came out, but I haven't listened to it all the way through much lately. I feel like it's her strongest album lyrically, and is just so much my vibe thanks to all the torture and poetry. Hope this new album is good, but I expect it to be a very different vibe, and I'm fine with that.

I watched Hocus Pocus for the first time today. I never watched it as a kid, but I know a lot of people my age who did. I can totally understand why people love it so much. I may watch the sequel at some point. This month I am trying to watch a Halloweenish movie for every day of October. I missed a day yesterday, but I plan on watching two movies one of these days to catch up. I've wanted to do this for years so let's hope that I can keep it up because I love this time of year. I plan to watch Sinners tomorrow.

Conversational Minefields, by Jedi Buttercup (G)

Show: SG-1, Eureka (TV)

Characters: Paul Davis, Jack Carter
Pairings: Gen
Categories: Gen, Crossover
Warnings: None
Author's Journal: [personal profile] jedibuttercup
Author's Website: Jedi Buttercup's Ao3

Why This Must Be Read: A fun, short crossover. The town of Eureka, for those unfamiliar, is a town of scientific geniuses ostestably gathered together to invent things the military can use. Jack Carter is the sheriff, a normal man in an abnormal place. And OF COURSE Paul Davis would be the Pentagon liason. It's just the sort of job he would have with his stargate program experience.

Lovely, by Martha (T)

Show: SG-1, The Sentinel (TV 1996)

Rec Category: Crossover
Characters: Daniel Jackson, Jack O'Neill, Blair Sandburg, Jim Ellison, Sam Carter, Teal'c
Pairings: Daniel Jackson & Jack O'Neill Friendship, Jim Ellison & Blair Sandburg Friendship, SG-1 Team & Daniel Jackson
Categories: Gen, Crossover, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Episode: The Light
Warnings: None

Why This Must Be Read: "Lovely" is one of my favorite pieces of eldritch horror period and single-handedly got me to watch The Sentinel. It's rich and interesting and strange. An absolutely fantastic tale of strangers being forced (and/or choosing) to work together, friendship/love, road trips, the geometry of existence, and... income tax evasion. A quick note that this fic is gen, but the sequel is slash.

you can hardly blame him for wanting to send backup, by Jedi Buttercup (T)

Show: SG-1, Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Rec Category: Crossover
Characters: Jack O'Neill, Buffy Summers, Daniel Jackson, Teal'c, Sam Carter
Pairings: Buffy Summers & SG-1 Team

Warnings: None

Why This Must Be Read: Grin. This is a fun crossover. Buffy has had some prophetic ideas of where she's needed, leading into the melding of her fantasy genre with SG-1's scifi without betraying either. If you enjoyed Buffy in her pink halter top in the Initiative, this is the fic for you. She is also so similar in some ways to Jack and just as physically strong as Teal'c. This series delights me.

today (right)

I hit a snag getting to lunch with catsman today. The light rail was closed in much of downtown - just for a day or two, but today was one of those days. :-0. I walked from the library to Chicago Avenue to catch a train at the U.S. Bank Stadium stop. (This is about 8 blocks, and going east-west that's about half a mile.)

Walking back to catch a bus was much nicer: no hurry, nice weather. Anyway, I got my exercise!

We ate the Thai restaurant on the West Bank but weren't satisfied with its quality. We'll try the brew pub across the street again. I'll text him a reminder that it doesn't open until 11:30.

a bit:

catsman had no idea when I meant when I said Joel McCrea was my 'golden age hollywood boyfriend.'

October's Bingo

EEEEEE [community profile] allbingo is having their fall festival prompt this month. this is probably my all time favorite of the bingos! I want to do a blackout of my card. I don't have time but oh do I want to!!

Kill the person in the group who suggests that you split up. That will eventually get you killed. virgin sacrifice Statistically you will turn an ankle and the creature will get you Anatomically Impossible Butcher Knife
Holy Water And the #1 rule for surviving a horror movie:DON'T HAVE SEX!!! Raisin Demons When approaching a room with a door that hasn't been opened in decades and the knob begins to slowly turn back and forth on its own back away! Do NOT ask loudly "Who's there?" Listen to the Nerd if You Want to Live
Nothing is ever over if it is still nighttime. If you are running for your life and are being chased by a monster/psychopath/axe murderer and you happen to be female take the high-heeled shoes OFF! FREE SPACE When you are trapped in a strange old house with your date NEVER say: "Let's try the basement!" or "Look! The stairs up to the attic!" When it appears that you have killed the monster never check to see if it's really dead.
If you're searching for something that caused a mysterious noise and find out that it's just the cat leave the room immediately if you value your life. Fell and Twisted her Ankle B Movie. As a general rule don't solve puzzles that open portals to Hell. If you open a door and the room you see is not the room that should be there do not explore it. In fact even if you close the door and see the correct room after re-opening it vacate the house.
Listen closely to the sound track and pay attention to the audience since they are usually far more intelligent than you could ever hope to be. Thursday is hanging in there?

1. At least the weather has been nice lately - in the low 50s, 60s, and 70s. Nice breeze. Cool enough for a light jacket. Was able to take a few long walks. One up to the WTC, and another to the South Street Seaport. Played tourist yesterday and took photos.

Here's the Anne Frank Tree - "a white chestnut tree, a clone grown from an original tree outside the hiding place of Anne Frank and her family in Amsterdam, 188 Keizersgracht. Anne wrote about her view from the annex window: “As long as this exists, how can I be sad?” and referred to the chestnut three three times in her diary. This tree in Liberty Park is the eleventh clone of the tree in the United States planted by the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect. The date, June 12th, also marks what would have been Anne’s 88th birthday, sharing a birth year with Martin Luther King. Jr and Audrey Hepburn."

2. I can't seem to draw at the moment - which is putting a cramp in my painting project. I keep trying and its not fitting what is in my head. I'm frustrated. It's like I lost the ability or something - all of a sudden. I think I may be too much in my head or too self-conscious. I draw best when I'm not trying to make it fit something, or not worried about it. Art is hard when others eyes are upon you, or rather you feel their critical eyes upon you. It's easier when you or rather I forget they exist.

3. Buffy and Angel Fandom Bits

Started rewatch of Buffy S4 and Angel S1 - I watch an episode of one every other day, skipping episodes I don't want to re-watch, such as the Angel episode "I Fall To Pieces" (I saw that one twice, and that was one too many times, I don't need to watch it again. Angel S1 has some horrible episodes.)

Saw Fear Itself and The Harsh Light of Day - and both hold up really well. Read more... )

In the Dark and Room with a View are a mixed bag. I like Room better. Which surprised me. Read more... )

Also been listening to podcasts. It's the current trend/fad - actors doing podcasts. (Not the famous ones, the struggling ones, who are also doing conventions to make ends meet - which is a reminder of how tough a profession acting truly is - to make a living in. There are more actors than there are gigs, apparently.)

Of the podcasts - I'd say Juliet Landau's
Re-Vamped is the best.
She's a good interviewer and very funny. She doesn't take herself too seriously, which is more than I can say for a lot of podcasters. Read more... )

Landau's podcasts are informative though - about the process, how the series was made, backstage tid-bits, auditions, etc. She also, being a theater geek and theater actress - delves heavily into the theater and the film backgrounds of her guests. If you are interested in the nitty gritty behind the scenes stuff - they are worth checking out. (I found out for example that the actress who portrayed Sheila in School Hard, went on to produce two award-winning documentaries, one about a cult, and one about sexual allegations against a hip-hop record producer. Also, apparently Drusilla and Spike were Seinfield fans, and watched all the episodes more than once.)

5. The First Responder Memorial Statue at Liberty Park at the World Trade Center. (it's also where we're supposed to meet in case of a fire or evacuation of the building at Crazy Workplace. I figured that out today - when I looked up the Anne Frank Tree - because I didn't know where Liberty Park was until I looked it up.)

Here's another photo for the road, before I go to bed..

Checking In - 2 Oct. 2025

The knee x-rays are done. I expect to know what's up/down with those by mid-November.

I spent the afternoon filing job applications and watching a joint session of city hall's Finance and Planning+Housing committees. Which kept my brain ticking over well enough, I suppose.

Not much else to mention.

Thursday Recs

Hello, everyone! I hope you brought your Thursday Recs!

Do you have a rec for this week? Just reply to this post with something queer or queer-adjacent (such as, soap made by a queer person that isn't necessarily queer themed) that you'd, well, recommend. Self-recs are welcome, as are recs for fandom-related content!

Or have you tried something that's been recced here? Do you have your own report to share about it? I'd love to hear about it!
