Being Human 4.03
If my theory is true, I must somehow make
likeadeuce watch this show. If only so she can write the inevitable Shakespearean crossover.
So. Hal. Aka "Lord Harry". Who is old enough to have fought with a shield (red). Call me crazy, but the idea that Henry V., who in history died young enough for that to work, became a vampire instead and these days is horrified at the indignity of having to work in a fast food restaurant (Hal, Buffy Summers did it, suck it up, no pun intended) when he isn't displaying his OCD about dominoes is too good to pass, so I hope Toby Whitehouse indeed went for it and didn't just throw around these hints as red herrrings. It also immediately made me more interested in Hal.
However, the price for best new vampire still goes to Regus the geeky researcher. If I hadn't loved him already for the comicverse explanations of "nemesis", I'd have died when I saw his "Team Edward" t-shirt. And was very relieved he wasn't killed off at the end of the episode but left with an option of returning.
Mind you: I was all prepared to growl about heteronormativity in this 'verse re: Regus' reaction to how being inserted in Annie's dream turned out, but then I remembered what's his name, Mitchell's vampire sponsor who was able to remain dry for a few decades, who most certainly did have a boyfriend. Still, I'm in two minds about this whole sequence. And the way the Gothic girl subplot worked out. Now of course one problem for the later is that, well, BtVS and AtS together provided one of the best mini arcs for a guest star ever, from the second season episode Lie To Me to the AtS finale Not Fade Away, wherein we saw a character starting out as a one note joke (Goth girl romantisizing vampires gets confronted with ugly reality) becoming so much more. Chanterelle becoming Lily becoming Anne, who ends up as the symbol of hope, optimism, compassion and human resilience in the apocalyptic AtS finale, not because she has leftover naiveté but because she's become that strong. So basically the character here felt like a mighty step back to the one note joke, though I freely acknowledge that nobody, including the writers at the time, ever thought "Chanterelle" in Lie To Me would ever be more.
Then again: was amused that Hal knows who Ivan and Daisy were and they evidently were/are a byword for romance in vampiric circles.
Can we have Annie not menaced anymore by the evil vampires du jour? She really should be beyond that by now. Otoh her interactions with Regus, even with my question mark about the memory sequence, were golden. The Tom and Hal bickering/bonding might not be unexpected but it's enjoyably executed, and I appreciate that the relationship continues to be quite different from Mitchell and George. (And that Tom's background, the way his adopted father raised him, isn't forgotten.)
...if Hal is indeed Henry V., then I'm all for Harry Percy/Hotspur having been a werewolf. Falstaff, too. Otoh Poins was clearly one of the vampire groupies of his time who thought of course he'd get spared or turned but ended up as dinner after exhausting his usefulness. Also Marguerite d'Anjou was a vampire hunter who distrusted her husband's entire family because of what Hal became, which contributed to the Wars of the Roses, big time.

Goddammit, what is British TV trying to do to me?

1.) He's old enough to have fought in a style that involved shields, and also to remember the plague, and burying bodies of same.
2.) A character, upon recognizing him, knelt down and said "my lord". Note that this isn't a vampire thing. We've had several vampire overlords whose minions were of course very intimidated and respectful, but they didn't do the "my lord" thing.
3.) He was also sarcastically referred to as "Lord Harry", as in "ah, Lord Harry here hasn't told you who he is, has he?".
4.) And he really was not pleased upon told he'd have to do Buffy's job at the Doublemeat Palace.
I'll keep you posted on whether or not I'm just imagining things and Hal is just a vampire who happens call himself Hal and is referred to as Harry and has loyalty issues.

I take it you've been liking it? I know I heard the most recent season was controversial but I don't know the details.

However, if you want to watch it, you have two options:
1) Watch season 1, the opening ep of s2 plus the last two eps (those are really important), thus sparing yourself the misery and inadequacy in between and still getting the important stuff, watch season 3 entirely, or
2) Start with s4 right away. Much as you, say, could start with s3 of Spooks at the point where Adam comes in without knowing the whole Tom Quinn saga, so to speak. Otoh this robs you of the breathtaking experience that is season 3 unspoiled, so better take option 1.

Probably will go with 1 since that's more easily/immediately available to me right now. . .(and I've got a long queue of stuff, anyway -- Downton rewatch + starting Justified + finishing Friday Night Lights + Game of Thrones when that gets released and then I can think about picking up another show :))
