selenakIn which we finally meet Alison’s mother, and OB’s second attempt at repeating the greatness of an Alison-centric role switching episode from season 1 is successful!
Last season’s try (the episode with Alison and Sarah switching roles again in the dry out clinic) felt like a “highlights from last season” repeat (complete with Sarah telling Donnie again as Alison what’s what). This season, however, the formula was remixed and came up with some great original twists, plus not so coincidentally this is the first time Alison’s subplot intersected again with the other clones. I really loved this episode.
Having Cosima the additional clone, not Sarah, made part of the difference, as did upping the stakes (of course Donnie gets taken hostage by a druglord; this is Breaking Bad lite, after all), and introducing, after much preparation, Alison’s mother, who is every bit the controlling suburban mother we were expecting but it’s well done so I don’t mind the cliché.
Btw, how do we know that however much she’ll flirt with him or maybe have a fling with him, Alison won’t end up with her high school sweetheart the minor druglord? Because he’s Mum’s favourite whereas Mum hates Donnie.
I note Donnie speaks a bit Portuegese, which sounded to me like exposition to something.
Alison’s concern for Cosima was great; I love it when the clones show affection for each other, and let’s not forget, Alison and Cosima have known each other a bit longer than everyone else currently alive.
Rachel and Scott: I continue to be captivated by this storyline. (And by Rachel having to learn how to play Agricola to maintain a cover for Dyad.) And continue to boo, hiss at Ethan Duncan, washing-his-hands father, although it occurred to me that maybe he was in reality a crafty magnificent bastard who knew that Kira, Cosima and Sarah wouldn’t be able to decipher the Dr. Moreau code without Rachel’s help, and wanted to engineer a situation where they would have to work together but not in a “Rachel uses her Dyad power for evil” way.
Helena and S punch/hug it out: not sure I buy it, but hey, handwaving, getting on with the plot.
