This is amazing, thanks so much! I’ve seen ‘Goodbye Lenin!’ and ‘Das Wunder von Bern’ (they are historical so educational) but the rest are all new to me. Especially looking forward to the Sherlock Holmes one and ‘Wir Wunderkinder’.
I agree that the Ostalgie criticism of ‘Goodbye Lenin!’ is unfair – we see Alex’s mother being harassed by the Stasi while her husband is in the West, and Alex being beaten up at the protest and then released because of who his mother is. And it turns out that even Christiane who seemed like the ideal citizen would have left if she hadn’t been too afraid. Obviously I can’t judge how accurate the balance of good and bad is but it came across as realistic and quite complex – like Christiane’s idealised version of the DDR might be an illusion, but it’s still important to the characters and they can get something valuable from it? It is a really good film.
