Interesting that they switched from Penny to Will; are there speculations as to why?
My friend who had grown up with it had some theories, which I think boiled down to: once the show reoriented to comedy-adventure, Will was more representative of their target demographic than Penny. But you still get fascinating artifacts like "All That Glitters" (1.26) in which Dr. Smith acquires a Midas curse, accidentally zaps Penny with it, and for her sake actually does something brave and apologizes. It lasts all of five minutes as reformations go, but even so. I have actually remembered it for years when I can't bring to mind most of the episodes that don't involve sentient vegetables.
