selenak: (Holmes and Watson by Emme86)

Due to spending the last week on the move, I only now had the time to watch these episodes.

6.02's case of the week twist was a very Elementary one which I think they've done before - the supposed terrorism threat was just a cover for a crime driven by greed - but it's rare enough that Elementary does crimes were murder isn't the main event or the point (though there was one death at the start of the episode, which they seemingly can't do without) that I was glad anyway. Also I find one of this season's emotional hooks - Sherlock's fear that his condition and the medication for his condition takes away from his ability to solve crime and thus from his raison d'etre - really works for me. Also, this episode brought back Joan's newly discovered sister Lin and gave both of them some closure on their mentally ill father, and that in turn served as another example why I love these particular versions of Holmes and Watson so much - the show repeatedly gives examples, in a show over tell way, of why both of them are good for each other. It's never just a one way road between them, with one of them in the position of eternal caregiver. Joan is concerned for Sherlock and supportive re: the post concussion syndrome, sure. But at the same time, he's also there for her in her emotional turnmoil over her estranged biological father, and that he uses her being a detective in his argument as to why she should read the letter was perfect.

6.03 had at its case of the week one of those things where I suspect the Elementary writers have just fun unearthing nerdy trivia and using them, in this case, the most obscure of signatories of the Declaration of Independence and his autograph worth. The guest detective Joan and Sherlock were visiting looked familiar, it feels like I've seen the actor before, and the whole short appearance came across like the type of gag cameo you give to a genre famous character actor, so I'm currently trying to match the face to crime shows I've seen. That, or maybe his appearance is meant as the introduction of a new character, of course.

Speaking of new characters, the fact that Sherlock's meetings with Michael so far had the two of them interacting solely with each other makes me a bit distrustful of Michael's existence. I mean, last season's big hint of Sherlock's condition was that he interacted with his dead mother. Inventing a sympathetic fellow sober addict who also happens to be a secret serial killer feels like the kind of thing Sherlock's mind could invent if damaged. There was a Holmes theatre play I saw the late, great Jeremy Brett on stage in, and an unrelated Holmes novel which both used the twist that Holmes-on-drugs invents Moriarty as his alter ego so he'd have a worthy opponent, and I really hope Michael isn't a variation of this twist.

Not least because I doubt the remainder of the season will be Joan solving crimes on her own and Sherlock actually will take that vacation his doctor so urgently commends, despite his declared intention...
