Back in Munich, laundry washing and catching up with my mail. Also with tv. I liked this episode, a rare case of the week that wasn't about murder and featured A PRIVATE CLIENT (you know, the kind ACD Holmes and Watson have all the time) bring the case to Joan, though he didn't turn out to be important in it. Also: Holmes & Watson vs Incel, and Marcus Bell turns out to be third season of TNG William Riker.

I'm tempted to wonder whether the US Marshals recently became co-sponsors of the show given the way they're talked up in this episode, but actually I liked that a fairly predictable "cast member gets a chance for promotion, ends up turning it down because he/she likes the team of regulars too much to leave" subplot provided a couple of Sherlock & Marcus Bell friendship scenes as well as a Gregson & Bell fatherly mentor & protegé scene, and actually ended with Marcus taking the job. Mind you, I fully suspect something will happen to prevent his future Marshal-dom, unless the actor wants to leave. In which case I'd miss him, but the reasoning Sherlock gives here actually makes sense. Any show where several cast members work for an organization which at least theoretically is based on promotion through merit has the problem that the audience wants the team to stay together but in vaguely realistic terms, they should all be promoted after some years if they're really competent. (See also: George Takei lobbying for years for Captain Sulu and finally managing it in the last TOS movie, but not before.)

Our retrieved kidnapping victim only briefly spotted at the very end of the episode, Maria Rodriguez, making money both by being an online dominatrix (I take it this "findom" speciality exists?) and by nerdy craftsmanship at conventions (unless she's blackmailed into weapons), is a rare case (for a procedural) where the sex related job didn't turn out to be relevant to the solution. That the red herring suspect was an incel seemed mostly to be there so that the show could let Joan and Sherlock make verbal mincemeat of same, but if ever someone deserved it, etc., so by all means.
