Day 08 ~ Favourite moment so far.

I can’t narrow it down to just one, especially since each season is its own thing. But here are my top four.

Season 1:

- Contessina vs two wannabe robbers in 1.02, The Dome and the Domicile. This is the first time the audience sees what she’s truly like, as war-caused misery brings a couple of wannabe looters to her front doors. At this point, there are no guards (there later will be), and besides, the current most powerful man in Florence is her husband’s sworn enemy and unlikely to send help. Contessina successfully bluffs the wannabe looters into leaving with nothing more than keeping her cool and smarts to back her up. (Runner up would be Contessina vs the Signoria in episode 1.04, but while that is spectacular, I love this one even more.)

- Cosimo vs the Pope, last round , in 2.08., Epiphany. This particular Pope, played by David „Cicero“ Bamber, is in a rarity for Renaissance popes not corrupt (in the traditional sense) and has been relentlessly on Cosimo’s case for the second half of the season. As Cosimo has indeed things to feel guilty about on the one hand, but the papal accounts to maintain in his bank on the other, this has been anything but easy. However, in this particular scene, the Pope loses the moral high ground in their argument, and the way Richard Madden plays Cosimo throughout is arguably his best acting in the entire season, as there are so many things going on with Cosimo, and you can see it.

Season 2:

- Episode 2.02., Standing Alone, Lorenzo and Giuliano right at the start as Lorenzo waits in front of their father Piero’s bedroom to break the (really bad) news of just how he’s accomplished his rabbit out of the hat in the season opener. Their brief conversation about it, concluding with „I didn’t have a choice“ /“Oh, you had a choice“/ „Yes. I did have a choice“, tells the audience so much about what their relationship is like in its emotional honesty, as well as the way they see each other and their father.

- Episode 2.08, Mass, the scene in front of the Palazzo Vecchio as control of the situation goes from the Pazzi to Lorenzo; it’s the show’s equivalent of first Brutus‘ and then Antony’s speech at Caesar’s funeral, and it’s suspenseful, chilling, exciting, and so many things at once. It most definitely is awesome.
