I also was spoiled for the fact that Chiana would become a regular character, so sorry, no opinions on that. Yes, her voice does change over the first few episodes, I have read that there was indecision about how much of an Australian accent she should have.
In terms of the shooting, I thought that the episode did a bit too much slow-motion and shaky-cam stuff.
On why Crichton is the only one of the regulars who is curious about whether Chiana is a criminal or not, I think that the others more cynically just wanted the strangers off their ship as quickly as possible without getting dragged into more trouble.
When I was first watching the show I even found a site arguing that Zhaan had killed Salis, on the basis that he had threatened her with mindwiping as well, and she was also alone when she was killed. One point against Chiana as killer is that when Salis sees the person who killed him he doesn't seem shocked or frightened at all, although that might just have been smugness.
The more interesting question for me is whether Chiana was telling the truth in the scene where John brought her food and drink, that she had never killed anyone. If she did kill Salis, I think that the way she looks in that final scene suggests that it might in fact have been the first time, and that it didn't leave her untouched.
