From my experiences in Berlin the natives just aren't very helpful and frequently just rude, which they think is charmingly authentic or something, insisting that despite their reputation and them frequently being at the top of "most unfriendly places" lists etc. it only means they are misunderstood... So chances are half of the people you asked may have even understood you, but just couldn't be bothered.
