kalypso: Heloise in Portrait of a Lady on Fire, with a black cloth covering her lower face, like a face-mask (PoaLof)
From: [personal profile] kalypso
You mirror my feelings about Portrait of a Lady on Fire exactly, down to the one flaw being that the eventual portrait is so implausible as an eighteenth-century artwork. Which is a pity; apparently the artist was closely involved in the film, and the hands we see painting are hers (I did like the scene where she was doing the preliminary work). I just have to imagine a Platonic form of that picture that gets it right.

But the rest of it is fantastic! I loved the completely matter-of-fact handling of Sophie's plotline. And that final scene, where we watch emotions playing across Heloise's face as she listens to the music she once heard Marianne play. I just watched it again, and I was sobbing. I could stare at Adele Haenel's face all day; her looks are startling.
