There have been movies I wanted to see on the big screen because I knew they'd look gorgeous, like Jupiter Ascending or Guardians of the Galaxy, but that wasn't the primary reason I wanted to see them. (And IMHO CGI dates faster and worse than old school animated or practical effects f/x, but that could be just me.)
I am pretty sure I saw some interviews with JMS saying that he felt he was done with B5 and was proud of it and was moving on....I know he's done a lot of comics and written screenplays and of course there was Sense8 and he just wrote a novel. I dunno if he's ever really gone back to anything like this. It seems uncharacteristic.
