While I could be wrong, since it's been years when I did read it, I seem to recall the original outline for B5 as published many years later had Sinclair become Valen only at the very end of the show. No Sheridan. Catherine Sakai was evidently set up to play the Anna Sheridan role, hence her being an archaeologist. (She'd have ended up in Z'ha'dum, etc.)
