Because of help, for which I am profoundly grateful, I was able to watch the season opener.

Clearly, the writers concluded that Burnham isn't Burnham without a woman older than herself, in a position of authority and with alternate perspectives in her life to rub against. I appreciate it. (And shall hope the President doesn't suddenly turn out to be evil, but mostly this show has earned my trust in this regard.) Especially since this introduction episode shows Michael's new foil to be competent, clear-headed, and with her criticism on point without going overboard with it. (So not the latest incarnation of that tired old ST trope, the Overbearing Admiral coming in to boss our heroes around only to be proven wrong.) Meanwhile, Michael deduced (presumably correctly) the President had a look at Nalas' files and that's how she knew what to say to talk him down. (I like my politicians wily and smart like that, and approve.)

The new President of the Federation aside, the episode starts out showing our heroes going through their latest mission with panache and perhaps a bit of hubris as far as Michael is concerned, and ends presenting them with a new challenge in the form of the mystery gravitational wave that is able to destroy whole planets and has just destroyed Book's home planet. I take it this will be the seasonal mystery, or part of it, as "who's the Red Angel?"/how to defeat the AI" was s2's, and "what caused the Burn?/ Can we reestablish the Federation?" was s3's. Given the title of the episode, and the discussion between Michael and the President at the end, there will also be the question of how to balance the few and the many, the attempt to save everyone with not being able to do so at times (without this leading to not trying to save anyone, which is the other extreme).

Given Saru in his subplot has managed to make So'kal feel settled and accepted on Kaminar, and is given explicitly the emotional permission to leave by the later, I expect he'll be back with the rest of the crew in the next episode... or will he? Maybe he'll get this new mission the President spoke of instead? Otoh I don't see the show keeping him apart from the rest of the ensemble for the entire season. Hm, we'll see. BTW, I appreciate the look at the Kelpiens and Kaminar 900 years later, that there are great differences (and beautiful aesthetics!), yet one also sees the continuing aspects.

The s3 tradition of interplay between Kayla Detmer and Joann Owesekun also continues along nicely, and I'm now expecting to learn more about the rest of the bridge crew as well.

Lastly: Grudge better be alright after that hit Book's ship took. Though I bet he and Michael won't use the "she's a queen line" again near butterfly people any time soon...

Agreed! I also approve of the new president and her dynamic with Burnham. I hope we see more of them.

First of all, nice to meet you! As an European, I'm in the same situation, but I had help as well so I managed to watch the episode, too. I'm very intrigued by the President, and her dynamic with Michael is already interesting. I really hope we learn more about the rest of the bridge crew, it's what I've kept wishing we got in past seasons.
