January Meme: 2022 Edition

As always in recent years, I'll do this meme in January. I've always enjoyed doing it, and look forward to your prompts, old and new friends.

Pick a date below and give me a topic, and I'll ramble on. I'm good at talking. It can be anything from fandom-related (specific characters, actors, storylines, episodes, etc.) to life-related to pizza preferences to whatever you want.

They will probably be brief, or not, depending on the subject. Also, I reserve the right to decline prompts that I don't feel equipped to meet.

Topics: you can get an idea from my tags/from the stuff I usually ramble about/from things you maybe wish I talked about more but don't. Also, please feel free to check out the 2021 January Meme, the January Meme: 2020 Edition, the 2019 one, the 2018 meme, the 2017 edition , and the 2016 January meme to see which topics I've written about in past years.

Classics salon and why you want to do one with me and [personal profile] cahn someday: what areas of background knowledge do you have, and what, if anything, would you be interested in learning more about?

Translation: Frederician salon has been the greatest experience of my liiiiife!!! :D :D :D (Timeline-wise, I still need to get my German up to snuff and haven't--quite--given up on French, but one day, maybe in a few years, I'll go back to Latin and Greek. And on that day, I'll get [personal profile] cahn to say something provocatively misguided in your presence...)

Ohhh, is this a meme that used to go round, or is it of your own invention? May I copy it and post something similar? (Feel free to tell me off if you'd rather not see me do this, okay?)

How about... on January 13: As for Borgia series on tv (pick any), what were the saving graces, according to you? What did you like, and what didn't work for you?

Some of your fave loyalty relationships! (If you want a narrower scope, how about loyalty in Star Trek?)

Feel free to pick any day. :)
lirazel: Spock, Bones, and Kirk from TOS ([tv] boldly go)

[personal profile] lirazel 2021-12-23 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'll pick January 3rd since the 4th is my birthday. :D

I would love to hear you talk about some of your favorite minor (or even one-off) Trek characters. Any show or multiple shows though I am especially biased towards TOS.

Jan 20 A Midsummer Night's Dream.

I still remember listening while you and Gareth had the most amazing conversation about Titania and Oberon.

The passion and knowledge both you had...

I think Julie D'Aubigny AKA La Maupin has to be a strong contender:

https://www.badassoftheweek.com/maupin

"Julie D'Aubigny was a 17th-century bisexual French opera singer and fencing master who killed or wounded at least ten men in life-or-death duels, performed nightly shows on the biggest and most highly-respected opera stage in the world, and once took the Holy Orders just so that she could sneak into a convent and bang a nun."

She is good and very chaotic indeed.

One of my top contenders would be Lorenzo Da Ponte, mostly famous for being Mozart's librettist. But beside that he had a truly crazy biography:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorenzo_Da_Ponte

Another strong entry would be Chevalier d'Éon.

:D Jan 15: So, riffing off mildred's topic, what Classics works (to be read in English translation) would you recommend to hook someone who doesn't know anything about it? (Aside from the Illiad/Odyssey/Aeneid -- but would also be open to interesting translations of those!) (And especially for someone who preferred the Aeneid to the Illiad and Odyssey?)

And on a different subject, if I can ask two questions, what other canon(s) remind you of Babylon 5? (That's intentionally vague -- feel free to interpret it in any way you like :) ) (If I get to ask two questions, maybe Jan 25 for this one?)
