Star Trek: Discovery 4.06:
Jonathan Frakes is directing again in an episode that visibly does homage to the submarine stories of cinematic lore and also adds one more miracle to Scotty's count, since he manages to save the crew 900 years after his death, in a manner of speaking. It's also the first episode where we get to know Grey in a context completely unrelated to Adira, as he manages to talk Discovery's evolving AI, Zora, through the cricis du jour, thus defying my prediction that he'll take over from Culber as ship's councillor by becoming more literally the ship's councillor. :) Anyway, those scenes were lovely, and I'm glad we're now getting to find out who Grey is other than "Adira's beloved". Given that one of the short films that Netflix put online between seasons 1 and 2 shows an empty Discovery a millennium into the future and the computer Zora interacting with the OC, I must say I had a queasy feeling about this whole pattern buffer business, but then I thought, nah, they wouldn't, this isn't even a season finale. However, I now wonder whether the crew will do this again at a future point, now that it's proved the Montgomery Scott method of survival is valid for more than one person, and that's when the shortie happens.

In other news, my month with the Mouse ended, but not before I saw the Hawkeye finale. I thought the miniseries was charming, Kate was great, Yelena ditto, Mentor is a good look on Clint and a good note to bow out on (since I suspect we won't see him again other than maybe in a cameo), and it's good that Natasha finally got ther on screen extended mourning (by both Clint and Yelena). Also, it was good to see Vera Farmiga again, says the Bates Motel fan in me. And of course Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk in the same week as Charlie Cox showed up in the most recent Spider-Man was a thrill, though I bet if you haven't seen Daredevil, you might not get what the big deal is, since he doesn't do anything extraordinary beyond evil overlord in the finale. Oh, and Rogers: The Musical was hilarious. I can do this all dayyyyyyyy!

Lastly: There are still a few days and topics available on the January Meme, if you want me to ramble on, say, which of the Disney Plus series is my favourite, or how if JMS had gotten Doctor Who as a showrunner I'd think he'd done it, not to mention: Hannovers versus Hohenzollern: who wins the 18th Century Dysfunctionality stakes? And what about that AU where William of Orange does adopt young Friedrich Wihelm as he briefly wanted to and thus Britain gets the dubious joy of being ruled by a different German dynasty?

I would love to read your thoughts on this if that's okay! For January 18?
