Yes, that's how it feels like to me, like giving up on anything creative beyond milking the nostalgia well, which is a shame because while not as good as Discovery, the show did have a lot of elements going fo rit. Return of the Jedi as a template is a good comparison. (Though Rise of Skywalker even more so.) Maybe Matalas like J.J. Abrams wanted ST to be more like Star Wars, which is never a good sign. I mean, I like Star Wars, but Star Trek is different and has its different types of narratives and characters, which is why I love it.
