[livejournal.com profile] neuralclone, having had a look at the state of Battlestar Galactica fanfic, not unreasonably observed a certain dominance of Kara/Lee stories and compared it to the absolute domininance of John/Aeryn stories in Farscape fandom. Mind you, so far - i.e. first season, we don't know what's to come, of course - this isn't mirrored by the show itself. One many things I treasure about BSG that it offers a rich ensemble of characters to love, and they all get development and airtime.

(Though as opposed to Firefly, where I love everyone equally, I do have my favourite on BSG. All hail Madam President.)

One thing that Kara and Lee have in common with John and Aeryn for me as well is that I'm far more interested in stories about them separately than about them together. Because I do like them; I'm just not into them as a couple. So I was delighted to find "Belief", a Kara/Leoben story set post-Kobol's Last Gleaming on Caprica. Human/Cylon relations at their most messed up this side of Six and Baltar.

Meanwhile, [livejournal.com profile] k_julia has started to post a terrific work in progress, starting here, with subsequent installments at her lj. It's gen so far, emphasis on Laura Roslin and Lee Adama, but everyone, from Kara to Billy to the locked up Boomer, is characterized with great skill and detail, as is the brittle, tense atmosphere. Only few more weeks, and then I'll have to be very disciplined to remain spoiler free for a few days. I'll probably try and do that via reading classy fanfic like this.

***

Incidentally, I'm getting the feeling it will be this way for me with Dr. Who as well. I like the Doctor, I like Rose, but I'm not interested in stories about them as a romantic couple, and I bet that's what's dominating the fanfiction. Frankly, at this early stage I'm mostly interested in more episodes, not yet fanfic, but hey. I'll change my mind before Christmas, I know. About the fanfic longing at any rate, not about the lack of interest in 'shipper fic.

[livejournal.com profile] andrastewhite has now seen the entire fourth season of Alias and speculates about season 5. No spoilers, just speculation.

I don't think I actually know any Doctor / Rose shippers... but I suspect you're right. What I would really want from DW fic is stuff about the Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack, but ideally *gen*.

You should persuade astrogirl and andraste and people to write fic for you! Then write some too! :)

Most of the stuff that gets linked to on LJ communities like [livejournal.com profile] doctorwho and [livejournal.com profile] new_who tends to be Nine/Rose, Nine/Jack or Nine/Rose/Jack shipping. There's a lot more gen stuff written about earlier Doctors on non-LJ archives.

I shall seek undeterred.*g* Also listen to a great audio play featuring the seventh Doctor, Ace and Jacqueline Pearce as a certain ruthless British politician again.

Good plan, though I have just hypnotized Andraste into writing Alias fanfic for me, and before that B5 fanfic. She might get the impression I'm exploiting her.*g* [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl is an option, though. One just has to find a ficathon for her to sign on to...

It's very hard to write gen fic that contains Jack (I know, I'm trying it). He keeps wanting to have sex with everyone and getting in the way of my plot, which is wobbly enough as it is (I can't plot for toffee, never can; I nick archetypal ones when I really need them, which is fine for Star Wars but not so good for Doctor Who.).
Then when I try to convince him that I never go above PG-13, and that's usually for violence and disturbing themes, he goes and sulks and won't do anything at all in the fic :-P

Totally second the idea that [livejournal.com profile] selenak should write some of her own :)

Utterly agree with the 'wanting more episodes' thing. I'm all about the gen, usually, in all fandoms (Except for Han/Leia, and that's canon).

There are quite a lot of 9/Rose shippers, slightly more 9/Jack slashers, a few OT3 people who watch the ship wars with great amusement, and I'm sure a few weird individuals who manage to ship 9 with 10 in some combination (urgh). Oddly enough, I haven't come across anyone who ships Jack/Rose in isolation, which would get rid of the TEHDOCTORISASEXUALGNASHTEETHFOAMATMOUTH problem. (Although it's quite hard to ship Jack with anything in isolation, really. It also may be the stigma of having a ship with the same names as Titanic. :-P)

Just my impressions. I'd be OT3 if I weren't gen, but I'm all about trio-friendships for some reason (Harry Potter, Star Wars and now Doctor Who. If ever I managed to publish an original novel my fans and anti-fans can wank over where I lifted my two-boys-and-a-girl central characters :-P). I can't stand ship wars.

I am trying to produce gen that might look vaguely like new episodes in a good light with a following wind, but that requires plot, unfortunately.

What, and no Doctor/Tardis 'shippers? Because that's a case of mutual love and loyalty if I ever saw one...

Oh, it should be possible to write gen OT3.*g* Hm. Do [livejournal.com profile] marinarusalka and [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 watch Dr. Who? Because they can do these amazing long plot-heavy epics in all their fandoms.

I loved your Jack story, so I'm looking forward to anything else the muse might inspire.

I was using OT3 as shorthand for 'everyone has sex with everyone else, except for the poor TARDIS' :-P, but we really do need an acronym for 'one true triangular more-or-less platonic friendship' (in Harry Potter too). OT3F, possibly? Whatever it is, I ship it more or less automatically.

The TARDIS, being a blue box most of the time, is unfairly neglected by shippers (just because she's a timeship and can't have sex doesn't mean she and the Doctor don't love each other, it's the one ship, ha, that's going to last the series), but RoseTARDIS is starting to put in an appearance.

The 'I want you to be safe. My Doctor.' line just about killed me in the last ep, because I knew that that was the TARDIS talking as well as Rose. Also, the 'You were fantastic, and you know what? So was I.' and Jack's 'Never doubted him. Never will.' I was crying almost the whole way through.

Neither [livejournal.com profile] marinarusalka nor [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 have anything Whovian in their interests list. Shame.

Aw, thanks *blush* My muse is in fine form, as it wants new Doctor Who as much as I do, so keep watching :)

Looks-and-age discrimination! I knew it. Also, it's completely true, of course.

The 'I want you to be safe. My Doctor.' line just about killed me in the last ep, because I knew that that was the TARDIS talking as well as Rose.

Same here. My Who knowledge is sporadic, but as far as I know, while it had been previously established the Tardis was telepathic, no previous series has made a point of wondering about its relationship with the Doctor.

*hugs blue box*

There's a pic somewhere of Rose hugging the TARDIS, and I think one of EcclesDoctor as well. Yay blue box!

As the years go by, I find that when I look for fanfic at all, I tend to go bck to the genfic. Most slash tends to be so predictable. Ship fic the same. Gen occasionally (when it's not all hurt/comfort) manages something new.

Mind you, I've seen original shipper and adult fic, but there's so much dross that I rarely bother reading much of anything these days. It's the lack of *plots*. I want emotional connections, but I want a plot as well (and not a plot I've already read ten times before in another fandom)
