The snowrain changed to snow, heavy snow, which meant no more skiing, and we returned to real life today. Next weekend is supposed to be sunny (but cold!) again, though, and I'll have another chance to go to Bad Wiessee then. In meantime, work and work-related travelling this week.

Also fanfiction. After some computer gremlin short-circuited [livejournal.com profile] andrastewhite's laptop (again), which meant she can't beta my [livejournal.com profile] spy_santa story, I shamelessly threw myself at the mercy of [livejournal.com profile] kathyh who came through like she always does. (I'm tempted to expect her to go Darth H any time now; that much friendliness, helpfulness and reliability is spooky!)

So, here is my entry for [livejournal.com profile] spy_santa. The request was for some backstory for my beloved First Generation spies, Arvin Sloane and Jack Bristow. Hm, I wonder why I got this task? *g*

No spoilers beyond season 3's Breaking Point, specifically the Chile reference in same.

oh yay! I just started on Alias watching again, after a hiatus, and the disc i currently have goes up to Breaking Point -- so as soon as I finish the disc, I'll have this to read--

I'm having a real resurgence of Sloane-love, and in the ep I just saw, Marshall dedicated a drum solo to "Carrie," so how could I not be impressed ;)

Breaking Point is one of my favourite episodes, and one of the reasons why I can't dismiss season 3, despite its weaknesses. My love for Breaking Point (for which this story doesn't really spoil, save for something a character who shows up there says about an old mission of Sloane's and Jack's) is not just due to to this scene:

Damn! You've discovered my secret, my hidden Darth is just dying to get out and plan world domination. Actually you were lucky with the day - any other day this week and I couldn't have done it.

Seriously, I really loved this story. I got a very strong sense of both the friendship between Arvin and Jack and the fact that they were playing complex mental chess with each other all the time.

oh my oh my -- I'm gonna go watch that right now (OK, after I do an inane but necessary errand, and my grocery shopping for the week, but you know, soon) and read the fic.

Oh, and I just got your adorable yahoocard. I love that little dragon.

I'm lucky with you as a friend in general. *hugs*

And thank you. I must admit I squeed when getting the assignment. It's not that I dislike writing the younger crowd, but that was just what I had hoped for. Now let's see whether the recipient likes it as well...

I just got through "Breaking Point" -- I'm growing fonder of season 3, now that I've gotten past grumbling over the absence of Will & Irina. I liked BP not just for the Jack/Sloane scene, but for the prospect of all the guys putting aside rivalries and working together for Syd. I'm feeling bad for Lauren, though, as she seems to have gotten in over her head --

Yes, that is another reason for me liking it. Also Sydney's plot with the "journalist" because though in retrospect it's obvious, he's a good enough actor, and though she is more callous than in season 1, she can't NOT reat to his pain.

Lauren: this is one of the last eps where she has her original characterisation, before the grand retcon of season 3 happens and poor Melissa George has to wear lots of mascara. More about that once you get there. Wish they'd stuck to what we see here.

i really liked the observation that they knew Syd was more vulnerable to empathetic suffering than physical pain -- and I thought they were using the cellmate for SOMETHING but didn't call that it was going in that direction.

I've got a vague idea of what the retcon entails, but if it's what I think it is, i'm not sure there's any way to reconcile it with her behavior in these shows. the moment i decided I liked her was when she and Sydney got pulled into the car chase, and Syd kept ragging on her about not being field rated, but instead of falling apart Lauren hung in there -- and not only that, she smiled. Like she was secretly getting off on the chase, and being a field agent, and doing all the stuff the others did that she only heard about. I've got no idea if that was even the intention of the scene, but the look on MG's face in that scene made me love her a little *g*
