Introducing myself
Apr. 28th, 2003 03:08 pmSo, after months of lurking, I succumbed, due to Raincitygirl's generous offer of a livejournal code. At any rate, now I won't feel like making anonymous phone calls when I post in other people's journals. And it might be nice to dump various ramblings somewhere without ursurping other people's threads. So maybe I'll finally get around to jotting down those notes on:
a) Later seasons of BTVS - why they fascinate me
b) Being as uncool as it gets, or: Why I love the SW prequels when I only liked the classic trilogy
c) She's a bitch or a Mary Sue: Female characters and the fans.
For startes, some political thoughts. I was - and still am - against the war in Iraq, for a variety of reasons, ranging from the precedent it sets (i.e. it's alright to ignore international law and attack a country which hasn't attacked you first, if you have the firepower to do so) to the consequences (more hatred, more violence, not less) to the complete and utter distrust and disgust at the Bush administration.
However. There's the question: Does the removal of a dictator (and his regime) justify an invasion? (Never mind that I believe Bush & Co. would have been perfectly happy with Saddam surpressing his people and executing them at random if he had continued to be the useful tool he was in the 80s - the fact remains that he's out of power now.) I live in a country where, sadly, we didn't manage to get rid of our dictator and his inhuman regime on our own half a century ago. A friend of mine is Romanian and told me she, for one, would have been grateful if someone, anyone, had invaded and gotten rid of Ceaucescu and the Securitate. It's easy for me, living in the security of a democracy, to say that the long-term consequences of regime change a la Bush outweigh the short-term benefits (getting rid of Saddam). It's not my child who could be saved from future bulllying, rape or murder, just as it's not my child who lost limbs or life due to the bombings supposedly for my own benefit. It's a dilemma without any answers I can see.
