all over the map
Nov. 2nd, 2003 08:36 amNews from the conference: furious debate with lots of Huntington and Hobbes quotes and refutations, plus debates on whether Christianity in any way still defines what's roughly called "the West", whether the Greeks and Romans weren't more of an influence, and whether there is such a thing as "Islam" anymore than there is "Christianity" (in the sense of something possible to see as a unified abstract). Yours truly and a (Christian) Syrian were the only women and pointed out while the professors were busy idealizing the ancient Greeks that from a female pov, things were looking far less enlightened way back when. (Not to mention from the pov of foreigners, slaves and "barbarians".)
'Tis was fun.
