more Firefly reflections
Apr. 22nd, 2004 06:28 pmOkay, the really long journey from Hamburg to Munich by train is why I usually take the air plane. Am worn out now, and yet I have to work tonight.
However, I was able to watch some more Firefly extras on the way - the audio commentaries, to be precise. Liked them all, but the most fascinating and informative by far was Joss Whedon discussing Objects in Space, which makes you want to propose to him at once, except he's already married. I mean, what other man can go from discussing existentialism to remarking "I don't have to point out that Sean looks really great with his shirt of, do I? I got a lot of grateful letters for that scene" and back to existencialism without pausing for breath? Also, the story of how he found atheism ("at age 16, in London, most embarrassingly yet appropriately when watching a Steven Spielberg movie, the special edition of Close Encounters of the Third Kind"), and the discussion for some of the basic ideas for the episode ("...and Tim said: Boba Fett. Except he said "Baba Fett". The guy dresses up as Logan for conventions, and he still can't pronounce 'Boba'...") ...
...yes, clearly the Troika was based on the ME staff.*g*
Of interest to the "does Joss build up female characters to hurt them?" crowd might be what he says re: the scene between Early and Kaylee: "The kind of scene you write and then everyone avoids you on the day you're shooting it and then you wonder whether you're really the decent human being you thought you were."
There are constant back references to both BTVS and AtS, such as during the scene when Early loses it and Joss comments that the first time he used the quick cuts to indicate a fractured mind was on Who Are You, "when Faith, played by Sarah, freaks out after Riley tells her he loves her", or to Angel's season 2 epiphany that there is no larger meaning and no big pattern, and therefore, every single action has to create it.
One ongoing feature in all the audio commentaries is the actor love; incidentally, before listening to the commentaries, I hadn't noticed that the actor who plays D'Hoffryn was the same who was the body-separating Doctor in I Fall To Pieces (in AtS' first season), and also one of the Alliance officers in the Firefly pilot. And was that "Morn" Mark Sheppard as Badger?
Before I dash off to earn more of my living, a question: the new Galaxy Gab is out, and it occurs to me that we might need more than one icon in the future, so are there any more screencaps of reporters in B5, male or female?
