Whovian recs
Jun. 19th, 2008 12:32 pmI don't think I recommended many, if at all, stories set in the Ninth Doctor's era. Not that I have anything against it, on the contrary, but I do look for other eras first. Today, though, I have not one but two stories from that period. The first one also uses a character from Old School DW who should be written about more often, but hardly is. Cameca, an Aztec woman in her late 50s, has the distinction of being the first on screen romance the Doctor has, back in his first screen incarnation played by William Hartnell. (There are many reasons why people should watch The Aztecs, which is one of the best historicals DW did. The fact that it makes mincemeat of the assumption that the Doctor was asexual or not interested in humans that way pre-New Who is just one of many.) There have been speculations that he might one day, when he's in his 13th and last body, go back to her to live out his final days with her, but I don't think I've ever seen someone pair her up with a pre-Rose, post-Time War Ninth Doctor before. Now that I've read the story, I wonder why not - it makes so much sense! Great characterisation, and wonderful use of the parallels between the doomed Aztec civilisation and the Doctor's immediate past:
Lady of the Flowers
In restrospect, the elements I probably enjoyed most about the Nine era were Mickey and Jackie, though we saw them only occasionally. The TARDIS Big Boom ficathon has produced some great stories, but I must say my favourite is one that gives us a look at Jackie Tyler and Mickey Smith between World War III and Boomtown, investigating an Alien invasion on their own. Well. Except for Sarah Jane Smith. And UNIT. And Torchwood. And a temp called Donna Noble (though she thinks this is all about food poisoning)....
The Idiot's Guide to Foiling Alien Invasions
Speaking of Donna (and was I ever overjoyed to discover there is a Donna moodtheme now which I promptly installed): Here's another delightful Doctor and Donna vid. They struck gold with the Tate 'n Tennant chemistry, they truly did.
Story-wise, here's a take on the Doctor's pov on Donna: Between Moments.
Lastly, in non-fictional terms: a new Moffat interview, in which our future Overlord talks about being Scottish, David Tennant and DW locations. The part which still makes me grin was where he casts himself as Gordon Brown and thus by implication RTD as Tony Blair:
Although the obvious successor, Moffat was uncomfortable about parallels with another Scottish number two who has taken centre stage. βIt was fairly easy for me to be the favourite because I was the only one who had been around since the beginning and turning up every year,β he demurs. βI was kind of the other contender, which puts me in sort of the position of Gordon Brown. And look how that turned out. The surly Scot comes in and it all goes to f*ck.β
