Sooo, Quentin Tarantino's new movie of the deliberately misspelled title. I probably won't watch it; among other things, it seems to me an excess of the tendency to be found in fantasy, sci fi and historical movies alike which I talked about at length in an old post of mine: I am the enemy you killed, my friend. (This review helps along with the not watching decision as well.) Incidentally, because most of the film was shot over here, QT is still giving interviews about loving Lilian Harvey movies (that would be one of the most popular comediennes during the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich) and how Glückskinder should be better known. Back in May when I was in Vienna at the Feuchtwanger conference, one of the Feuchtwanger scholars living in California told a story about being called in for advice on the film, as to whether someone's accent is "plausible" when said character pretends to be from Pitz Palü to explain said accent as part of a general pretense of being German. Did it somehow sound like a countryside German accent? Quoth my friend, no, but it doesn't matter, Mr. Tarantino, because Piz Palü is in Switzerland, not in Germany. QT refused to believe this, despite geography being rather on my friends' side, and said a crucial gag was hanging on the Piz Palü line. I've no idea whether it's still in the film.

Fanfic recs of the day:

Torchwood/Doctor Who:

In my unique position: in which Alice Carter becomes Jenny's Companion, and they travel through time and space. Rather wonderful crossover, featuring the obvious suspects in cameos, giving Alice a plausible way of slowly healing, and the Alice-Jenny interaction reads delightfully plausible to me.

Torchwood:

Four lives that Owen Harper saved + one he didn't: Owen/his issues are still my original Torchwood OTP, despite later additions like Gwen/Rhys or CoE/This Awed Viewer. This story is a great Owen portrait, in his messed up, (sometimes) trying to be better glory.
