My review about the absolutely delightful movie Up will have to wait some more, not least because of Darth Real Life and limited time online, but also because I feel the need to squee over the following news:
MIND OF EVIL IS GOING TO BE RELEASED ON DVD AND IN COLOUR!!!!!
Those of you who have seen this Third Doctor serial already know why this news is squee worthy. So let me talk to anyone even vaguely interested in Doctor Who - especially you, New Whovians, who haven't seen any of it but have something of a liking for the Doctor/Master pairing: quite simply put, Mind of Evil is Doctor/Master slash fic on screen. Every cliché newer fandom came up with is there already - lots of banter, bondage, torture, twisted hurt/comfort, oh, and intense telephone conversations. But this is far from its only virtue. Mind of Evil is also a great example why the bad reputation Jo Grant has in the media as the epitome of the "useless screamer" companion who is helpless and constantly needs to be rescued simply isn't true; in this story, she disarms a dangerous criminal attempting to hold her at gunpoint with an aplomp Martha Jones would approve of, and taunts the Master by beating the Doctor at checkers. Then there's the Brig (that's Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart to you, young fan) in great form, and he, too, gets his share of banter, complete with undercover rescue sequence.
Last but not least: the scene where the Doctor tries to explain Bessie (that's the car Three cheats on the TARDIS with) to his old frenemy by flailing hand gestures and the Master picks this up in his reply is one of the funniest DW moments ever. If you miss it once that DVD is released, it's your own fault.
