A fun, summer movie, especially if you are of the "Hope should have been the heroine of the first movie" Persuasion. Evangeline Lilly is greatly enjoying herself superheroing in what might be more accurately called "The Wasps and the Antmen". Mind you, to be fair: Scott Lang might belong in the MCU male character category subtitled "man child" like other People who shall remain Peter Quill, but he has one definite virtue ahead of most other male MCU characters, no matter their category: he's a fabulous dad. In a genre where lousy or even just mediocre fathers are present in overabundance, Scott's devotion to Cassie (expressed not just in saving-her-life situations like many a dysfunctional dad's, but in every day situations like playing with her, and by knowing all about her school classes) truly shines. It's also my main explanation for "what does Hope see in him?" Meanwhile, her own relationship with Hank is on a far better footing due to the combination of the last movie's events, and, err, a fall out from Civil War Situation which is Scott's fault, and I hope someone writes a "Hope and Hank during those two years" story, because I would so read this.

New characters: this movie doesn't have one main villain, it was a couple of antagonists, some who are just little bads, and one with a tragic backstory. Which says some spoilery stuff about SHIELD. )The miniaturizing and maximizing are used to great effect in the chase and fight scenes, and everyone gets to do their share of rescuing someone else, though as I said: if this is anyone's movie in particular, it's Hope's, dealing with distracting bad guys while on a rescue plot with aplomb. The spoilery mission Hope and her father are driven by for most of the movie. )

Favorite gag: there are many, but mine is something concerning Luis ). I also have to say that as opposed to Thor: Ragnarök, where my problem was that all the relentless gags left no breathing room for any of the actually tragic events to have emotional impact, here I felt the balance between comedy and emotional beats worked far better for me. Meaning: yes, it's a lighthearted film, but spoilery emotions are very real ).

In conclusion, I enjoyed myself enormously. Now, the mid-credits scene is a direct tie in to Infinity War, so if you don't want to know how the events of IW effect our regulars here, don't watch. (I didn't have a problem, not least because I expect the spoilery stuff to be undone by IW2, but I know others feel differently.) The very last scene post credits is a simple visual gag, and can be missed.
