Day 3 - Favorite Starship

The Enterprise – D. No, it’s not the original, and it doesn’t have the sleek elegance of later starships. But the fact that it’s so big and unmilitarily comfy is what appeals to me – this one really is designed to offer room for families to live in as well. Not to mention that TNG was shot before darkly lit starships became all the rage, and I like the bright, beige look, sue me. Also: the observation deck on Ten Forward makes this the bar with the most gorgeous view on a star ship, hands down. And while you have to pay Quark for the use of his holosuites on DS9, the holodeck on the big D is free of charge. Lastly: having a therapist on board (instead of dumping any psychological care on the ship’s doctor) looks like a better and better innovation TNG made the more time passes. I like my counsellors on my starships, yes I do.

Day 09 ~ Least favourite character.

I find this question always a bit tricky to answer, because I’m not quite sure about the intention and qualifications. By which I mean: in most, though not all fandoms, there are characters I’m supposed to dislike whom I dislike. (Which, btw, doesn’t mean they’re bad characters, au contraire, they fulfill exactly their purpose in the narrative they were supposed to fill, and I would not want to miss them!) Then there are characters whom I’m not supposed to dislike but whom I dislike anyway. (This happens not nearly a soften to me as you’d think, but it does happen. *waves to Bill Adama*) And then there are characters whom I don’t dislike at all, but who would qualify for the designation „least favourite“ anyway because I’m invested in everyone else more.

In terms of The Medici, this translates into:

Characters I’m supposed to dislike whom I indeed dislike: neck-to-neck race between Giovanni de‘ Medici in s1 and Jacopo de‘ Pazzi in s2. Both are dastardly evil patriarchs and life ruiners showing nonchalant disregard for everyone else. I think Giovanni might be just a bit more chilling because as opposed to Jacopo, he’s not a hater. His victims just don’t register as human beings with him. Due to rl echoes, I find this just a bit more frightening than Jacopo’s Captain Ahab attitude.

Characters I’m supposed to like whom I dislike: none so far in this show.

Characters I’m just plain indifferent towards when I’m not supposed to: Lorenzo the Older (i.e. Lorenzo di Giovanni) in s1, Marco Bello for the first two thirds of the season. In both cases, I can see the trope the writers are going for, but I don’t think the result really works for me.
