Friends, fellow geeks, lend me your ears. Your help is asked for. First of all, [livejournal.com profile] andrastewhite came up with a brilliant rationale for the only flaw Once More, With Feeling has. She reasoned that it was really Andrew who summoned Sweet, and that the Trio upon realising that this hadn't been the best idea used one of Jonathan's spells to make Xander think he had done it.

Next, this led us to contemplate the missing Trio scenes for Once More, With Feeling. We decided that the three would have the classic "Kirk or Picard" debate and wished some filk-gifted person could be found to do it justice. Contemplating this, I decided to take it as a challenge. I've never written filk before except for two verses for a little Blake's 7 ditty to Beethoven's Ode to Joy.. But I have been in dozens of Kirk vs Picard debates. (On the Jean-Luc side of the fence.)

Before embarking on this terrifying enterprise, however, I need some help. Obviously, I need songs to filk. Preferably something from Sondheim, to fit in with Once More, With Feeling. [livejournal.com profile] caille and other musical lovers, does anything come to mind? Or something for three voices from a not-Sondheim musical? Or any songs which spring to mind if one thinks of Kirk and Picard respectively, with a verse or two devoted to Sisko and Janeway thrown in? (I suppose I'll have to include some Andrew praise for Archer, which will be tough - I never saw more than three episodes of Enterprise.) After all, I want the result to sound more intelligent than

There is really just one choice:
The man with the voice.

In other news, I love the livejournal community. [livejournal.com profile] ide_cyan, whose Aeryn mood icons make me pale with envy (I'd love to have a paid account), felt moved to commit Farscape fanfic by my link to [livejournal.com profile] searose's ponderings on J/A and J/S respectively. And she came up with the only future fic featuring a John, Aeryn & baby scenario which I absolutely loved. Which undoubtedly has to do with the fact Scorpius and Harvey are there as well…

My LiveJournal Sitcom
At the Empire State Building (TNN, 3:00): selenaK (Ben Stein) gets lost on the way to aliera9916 (Adam Baldwin)'s house and spends the night in a hotel. Then, thran (Judd Nelson) and lizbee (Chris Rock) collaborate on writing a romance novel. Afterwards, piedmargaret (Norm MacDonald) marries superplin (Peter Cushing)'s grandfather. Later, honorh (Bob Saget) sets shezan (Kurt Russell)'s armchair on fire. That same day, caille (Burt Reynolds) causes problems at work when a file from raincitygirl (Frances McDormand) has a virus. (Series finale.)
What's Your LiveJournal Sitcom? (by rfreebern)

Two questions: Who is Ben Stein, and who is Bob Saget?

(re-posted to fix the HTML... nevermind the first comment, I'll delete it.)

I'd have to look up Ben Stein (http://uk.imdb.com/Name?Stein,+Ben), but Bob Saget (http://uk.imdb.com/Name?Saget,+Bob) used to be the dad on the sitcom Full House (that which spawned the Olsen Twins), and the host of America's Funniest Home Videos.

I don't know much about Ben Stein, but there was a TV show called "Win Ben Stein's Money" where contestants had to compete against him answering trivia questions.

Ben Stein started out as a speechwriter for Nixon and later became an actor and game show host. He's probably best known for his role as the teacher in Ferris Bueller's Day Off who checks attendance, saying "Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?".

'Comedy Tonight' (I think that's the title) from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum springs to my mind. And it has multiple parts.

In the great debate - Picard, who didn't ignore the Prime Directive any old time he felt like it.

Bob Saget?!?

Gah! He's a truly annoying comedian. I don't wanna be Bob Saget!

Thank you!

Apparently, you're stuck with him - [livejournal.com profile] gehayi tried this as well, I just saw, and you were cast as Saget again.

But hey, I just heard this Stein person used to write speeches for Nixon...

Thanks for the encouragement!

It had results. "The Ballad of the Starship Captains" (based on "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd") is already written and shall be posted tomorrow morning.

One word: Sisko.

Sounds cool though - it never did sit well with me that Xander had summoned Sweet. And, as a girl who saw a musical production of Star Wars, I have to say that filking is very very of the good. Um, I can't offer any help, but I can offer moral support. Go you! Yay! And so on.

Well, I think I must object or demure, or something... I keep getting pegged as a Baldwin. What's up with that? Not that they're not cute and whatnot but hmmmm...

While the Sisko is cool...

...and I regard DS9 as the consistently best written of all the Trek shows, I will always be a Picard girl at heart. Blame Patrick Stewart.

Meanwhile, the musical enterprise has made progress - see lj.

Better a Baldwin than a former...

Sadly, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street was stronger than Pseudolus and the Gang from A Funny Thing.... But I committed Sondheim filk nonetheless. See today's entry.
