More Fanfiction: Two Heroes Vignettes

Brothers and Sisters
I.
When Mohinder finds out he had a sister he never knew, he feels oddly cheated, as if he had lost a race before it ever began. When he finds out he was born to save his sister’s life and arrived too late, something in him settles. It makes sense now; this constant wandering through labyrinths to seek out genetic anomalies. They’re his siblings, lost; and now at last he has a chance to retrieve them, help them, and maybe win that race after all.
II.
The morning after Jessica died, Niki gets up early as usual to be first in the bathroom. They both learned a long time ago they’d better be ready and dressed before Dad ever woke up, and Jessica always takes longer, so Niki is careful to be first. She sits on the toilet, feels the relief and thinks Jess is probably using those additional minutes to sleep some more, lazybones, and it’s only then she remembers.
Looking in the mirror, she starts to cry.
III.
Kimiko and Hiro are both good, respectful children, and when their father says he’ll take Hiro along on his trip to America, Kimiko does not argue, even though she is six, not four, and thus would be the better choice. But she starts the game of faces again; their competition to see which one of them can make the most outrageous grimace while they all kneel around the table when their parents aren’t looking. The trick is to get back to normal in time, of course, as their father must never catch them at it. A little voice inside Kimiko tells her she’s better at this because she’s older, and besides, her father always looks at Hiro first. Her father is bound to catch Hiro at it.
She feels guilty and tells Hiro they have to stop the game, or their faces will remain like that forever and ever. He believes her and looks frightened and just a little bit thrilled.
IV.
When you’re eleven years old and your mother gets pregnant, you’re bound to find this embarrassing. Among other reasons because you’re old enough to realize this means your parents still have sex, which is just weird. In Nathan’s case, he realizes a bit more than that, because he can count. Peter arrives nine months and ten days after his father’s heart attack – which they must never, ever, call anything else -, and he can make the connection to his mother’s uncharacteristic behaviour towards his father afterwards. So Peter, in effect, is the result of a bribe. Or maybe he’s a long term stratagem, his mother’s way to ensure the heart attack doesn’t happen again, one more method to tie his father to survival.
Maybe that’s why his father doesn’t really like to look at the baby once it is there, concludes Nathan, and finds himself in the nursery, reading Winnie the Pooh out loud because someone really should.
V.
After being told that Claire is adopted, Lyle goes through a period of wondering whether he is, too, and whether his parents are just waiting to tell him. This actually lasts until he finds out she’s invulnerable, because that pretty much settles it. Lyle doesn’t have any special abilities.
He’s not jealous of Claire, but he does resent her a little for having told Zach instead of him. Then he is made to forget this until all hell breaks loose, and then he wonders whether maybe at some point he was jealous of Claire, massively jealous, and his father made him forget that, too.
VI.
Claire has nearly finished packing when the boy shows up. One of Nathan’s sons, she doesn’t know which one, and she doesn’t want to know. They’re not her family, they never will be. Nathan is a liar, and if Peter can’t see that, he’s blind. The boy looks at her, all dark eyes and dark hair, like the rest of the Petrellis, and asks: “Can you help me find my brother?”
He probably thinks she’s the new nanny. There is a lot Claire could say, and the anger in her is hot enough to burn. “Please?” the boy asks.
Ten more minutes in this house, but that’s it, Claire decides, grabs his hand, a little unkindly, and starts to help him look.

Five Lies That Made Nathan Petrelli
I.
You don’t get to be top of your class throughout high school and college without hard work, no matter how naturally intelligent you are. That should be obvious to everyone, but Nathan considers himself lucky, because apparently it’s not. Here is something even more obvious: students who work hard aren’t popular. They’re nerds. They’re derided. It’s not that you aren’t expected to do good when you’re on the Ivy League application treadmill, but you have to look as if it’s easy for you, something that only that only takes five minutes before class, not entire hours each day of the week. Nathan doesn’t intend to spend high school at the fringes. Nor does he intend to have lower grades because other people are stupid. The solution to this is lying, clearly. He has to make sure to talk about nothing but sports and girls, of course, to pretend being bored by anything more challenging than spelling tests, and he has to cover for the time he spends studying. This becomes easier once Nathan isn’t a single child anymore. “Shit, I’m stuck with babysitting my brother again,” is a great excuse, and nobody ever asks “isn’t that the nanny’s job?” Well, Larry Osborn does once, and Nathan gives him his best superior smile and says “yeah, but the nanny is really hot”. Cue whistles and eager questions for details, and no one wonders about his alibi again.

Actually, Peter goes through several nannies, just as Nathan did, which is probably intentional on their mother’s part, and most of them aren’t teenage boy fantasy material. When Nathan is sixteen, an exception arrives, though, one who is way more interesting than any of the girls at school, and Nathan manages to lose his virginity to her. He never mentions this to anyone, though, because that is the day of his father’s second heart attack. Nathan and Consuelo are sneaking off to one of the unused guest rooms for a follow-up and find him. Pills this time, most of which they make Mr. Petrelli throw up again. After this, of course, Consuelo is dismissed and Nathan’s mother tells her icily that if one word that casts doubt on Mr. Petrelli’s heart attack gets to the press, Consuelo will end up in jail for sex with a minor.
At four, Peter doesn’t know about any of this, naturally. He only understands Consuelo is gone and complains, telling Nathan he wants her back and asks whether Nathan doesn’t, too.
“No,” Nathan said, who tried to give Consuelo the money he got from selling the car his father gave him, which had been his father’s attempt of making sure they never talked about this again, in vain. She had simply slapped him and left.
“Liar,” says Peter.
III.
It’s a simple question; just a thing for the paperwork. Heidi’s family contains a lot of lawyers, too, and it’s understandable they wanted a prenuptial agreement. No reason to stare at the question for a solid minute in silence. At least he’s alone.
Previous children?
She’s dead, Nathan thinks; there is no point in bringing up a dead girl. Nobody knows, except for his parents; he hasn’t even told Peter. In theory, nothing spoke against telling Heidi, of course. His relationship with Meredith had ended years before he met her.
He can’t bring himself to do it. Maybe it’s because as long as he never says it out loud, never says “I had a child once, a baby girl, and she died in a fire”, it isn’t real to anyone else, and maybe it’s because he was not there when it happened, and he doesn’t want Heidi to know that he failed Meredith and her child in that way.
No, he writes, and is lapsed Catholic enough to expect a cock to crow somewhere, but his office is filled with nothing but silence.
IV.
It didn’t happen. There is no possible way in which it could have done. He didn’t fly. This is crazy, and maybe he has finally lost it, and his father’s depression caught up with him.
“Nathan,” Heidi whispers, heavily drugged, “Nathan, where were you? You were – in the car, you were suddenly - ”
He’s holding her right hand in both of his. He knows she can feel his fingers caressing her. Because she still has feeling in her upper torso. She won’t be able to move her legs again, not ever, though the surgeon tried to phrase it somewhat more euphemistically. You could bang a hammer against Heidi’s legs, and she would not feel it, not ever again.
“I was thrown out of the car,” Nathan said. “When we crashed.” His mouth feels parched. He doesn’t recall the last time he drank something. “I’m sorry.”
“But…” Heidi protests, and falls silent. Her blue eyes are full of doubt and confusion. Then she closes them again, and though she doesn’t pull back her hand, it’s clear that she wants him to go.
V.
Drunken wakes are Irish, not Italian. Still, when all the guests are gone and their mother has withdrawn, Nathan and Peter end up in the garden with a bottle of Scotch, and Nathan realizes he will have to stay for the night, because he’s on his way to getting truly drunk. Well, Simon and Monty are with Heidi’s sister. And Heidi… is in the hospital.
Peter is in a weird mood. As opposed to Nathan, he has never been close to their father. Maybe he hoped that would change one day, and maybe he had given up on it. At least he doesn’t know the truth about the way in which Pop died.
“It wasn’t your fault,” Peter says and for a moment, Nathan thinks he made the unforgivable mistake of thinking out loud so Peter did learn the truth, after all, but then Peter continues: “It wasn’t his first heart attack, okay? And he chose to have Linderman as a client. He chose that. So stop thinking it was your fault.”
“I don’t –“ Nathan starts, trying to get the bottle back from Peter, and Peter gives it up, putting his hands on Nathan’s shoulders instead. He’s wearing the same suit he had on the day he was supposed to give his deposition, but his hair, combed back today as it was then, is starting to fall into his face again.
“I want to hear you say it,” Peter insists, voice just a little bit slurred. “You need to. Nathan.”
“It wasn’t anyone’s fault,” Nathan whispers, and it is done.

II reminds me of the daily skirmishes with my sister in the bathroom every morning and the connection between Peter and Mr. Petrelli's heart attack is mind-boggling but would make so much sense!
III of Nathan's lies is heart wrenching. I said this before but I hope they don't waste this potential and explore this relationship next season.

But my personal favorite is the Lyle one, just because I've just rewatched the series and Lyle's reaction to Claire's "We wouldn't be a family anymore" is an interesting one. Nice work. :)

Date: 2007-06-02 04:59 pm (UTC)One thing all of them make me notice is how often the show works with pairs of siblings where one is ignored in favour of the other: Mohinder for Shanti, Kimiko for Hiro, Peter for Nathan, Lyle for Claire, and in a twisted way, even Niki for Jessica.
The show makes this clear in most of the cases, yet doesn't fall into the trap of blaming the sibling who gets more attention, nor is this attention necessary good for them (in case of Shanti it is futile because it's too late, and in case of Jessica it causes her demise, as it may have caused Nathan's, either metaphorically or literally), which is a far cry from the "evil stepsister" syndrome a lot of fans seemed to develop in the early part of the show's run.
Another point, and this is in a way connected, is how Peter comes across as a much younger sibling - someone who arrived too late to witness what had shaped the dynamics of his family and who is simultaneously advantaged and disadvantaged because of that. You capture this very well I think.

Kimiko's and Claire's are nicely ambiguous as both girls are torn between envy and simultaneously wanting and not wanting to punish their brothers for something their fathers have done
Yes, that was what I was going for.
Nathan's is both scary and cute (scary because like Micah, he understands way too much, and cute because, hey, he's reading Winnie the Pooh to Baby!Peter! Awww.).
I scare myself in combining Petrelli dysfunctionality with cuteness, but Nathan and Peter as children lend themselves to it!

Yes. The older siblings aren't demonized because of it, not even Jessica-as-Niki's-alter-ego (who is really Niki herself, though that was debated for a long time, I know), as her primarily goal remains to protect Niki and she comes through for her in the end, helping Niki to integrate.

They're going to have a hard time casting teenage or early twenties Nathan, though--I don't think Pasdar could pull it off. Casting Baby!Peter will be no problem--they just need to comb Hollywood's stock of child actors for a kid with huge puppy eyes and floppy dark hair.
I also loved the one with Claire and Nathan's son. She's a Petrelli by blood, but she doesn't *feel* like one (yet). It's going to be an interesting dynamic to explore in Season 2.
The 2nd ficlet was like *crack*. CRACK. You're feeding my addiction. Yesssss...
I. Ah, Nathan the politician in the making. I get the feeling that Nathan's a *born* politician--it just comes naturally to him--the way he instinctively knows what will make him popular, esteemed, acknowledged. Loved it.
II. Loved the last line--Peter can always see through Nathan--the funny thing is that nobody else believes him.
IV. I want a Season 2 scene where Heidi has it out with Nathan over *everything*. That's gonna be one hell of a scene.

Date: 2007-06-05 04:28 am (UTC)Well, obviously they couldn't use him, but I don't think it's impossible to find an actor in his 20s - which is what is usually used for teenagers, Hayden P being the exception who actually IS a teenager - with enough physical resemblance to pull of Nathan at any point between, say, 14 to 24, if, of course, he can act well enough. So far, they did a great job with the Petrelli family casting, after all - all good actors, all looking as if they could actually be related, and wow, chemistry.
(Out of my head, examples of tv shows using flashbacks with teenage actors playing characters previously introduced to us as adults - X-Files (Mulder), Star Trek: The Next Generation (Picard), oh, and of course the entirety of Young Indiana Jones...)
I also loved the one with Claire and Nathan's son. She's a Petrelli by blood, but she doesn't *feel* like one (yet). It's going to be an interesting dynamic to explore in Season 2.

Loved the last line--Peter can always see through Nathan--the funny thing is that nobody else believes him.
This was the one by beta summed up as Petrelli family dynamics embodied via: Mr. Petrelli moving on his path of self destruction, Angela knowing her teenage son as sex with the nanny but letting that pass until she can use it, Nathan trying to do the decent thing but managing to do it in the most insulting way possible (with Consuelo - he sold the car immediately once he got it so she'd have money, but of course, you know, offering MONEY...*headdesks*) and Peter knowing Nathan lies because Peter knows Nathan.
I want a Season 2 scene where Heidi has it out with Nathan over *everything*. That's gonna be one hell of a scene.
Indeed, because by now, there are such a lot of kept secrets to talk about. As I said elsewhere, I think Heidi will be more hurt that he didn't trust her enough to tell her about Claire (once he found out Claire is alive, at least) than about the flying thing, especially since both Peter and Angela do know.

Absolutely. Actually, I'm doubtful about whether Peter's going to be living with the Petrellis from now on--I somehow can't see Claire letting him anywhere near Mama P after what happened.

I particularly like II (because it says so much about *siblings*), III (because it broke my heart, the depth of understanding and emotion Kimiko feels), IV (because this rings so true about Peter's genesis *g* and why Nathan does care), and V (because the characters at the fringes have stories, too, and resounding ones).
