This week's [livejournal.com profile] fannish5: What five characters would you like to see get more attention in fan fiction?

(In the spirit of the meme, I won't list favourites of mine whom I always love reading more of but who already have ample fanfic devoted to them, so, no Petrellis here. Or Elizabeth Swann.)

1.) John Locke, Lost. There's still so little fanfic, at least that I could find, and three years onwards, he's still the most intriguing character on that show to me, so, a pox on the age-ism. (Can't be Locke's, err, less than stable emotional state, because have you looked at the other characters who do get written about?)

2.) Audrey Hanson, Heroes. Audrey was a semi-regular during the first half of season 1, a female character far better written than poor Niki who was a regular during the same time, and I was so happy to see her back in the last but one episode, no matter how briefly. She's no one's love interest, she's on the show because she's FBI, doing her job (hunting down a serial killer). Why isn't there more Audrey fic? (Note to self: stop whining and write about Audrey next time the Heroes muse strikes.)

3) Elizabeth Lochley, Babylon 5. Resented at the time because she replaced Ivanova by much of fandom, but I liked Lochley. Both during the fifth season of B5 and on Crusade. I'd like to see some exploration as to why she made the choices she did before appearing on the show (notably during the Earth Civil War - given the way s4 presents Sheridan as so utterly and completely in the right and the only logical choice in that confict, this would be a great opportunity to look at the other side through shades of grey), her backstory with Zoe, her backstory with Bester, and I absolutely want to see some interaction between her and Delenn during the show (other than those two scenes we got). The relationship with Garibaldi on the show was great, more of that would be even better.

4) Max Eilerson, Crusade. Because there is little enough Crusade fanfic out there, and most of what does exist is mostly Galen/romance partner of choice. Unabashedly playing favourites here, I want more Max!

5) Abigail Brand, Astonishing X-Men. Yours truly is only waiting for the current arc to conclude, but that's no reason why the rest of you shouldn't be writing my favourite among the characters Joss newly created for the X-Men verse. She's ruthless, she exploits Our Heroes for what she thinks is the greater good, and she has great snarky banter with Hank McCoy. What's not to like?

One of the more annoying things about the way the media presented the restart of Dr. Who back in 2005 was the claim that Rose was the first companion to do something other than scream. As if. Behold a a vid showcasing some of the kick-ass ladies who went there first: Sarah Jane, Leela, Romana (both regenerations), Nyssa, Tegan and Ace:

That is an awesome vid. Thanks for linking to it! (I only wish it had included Barbara.)

I heartily agree that there should be more Audrey fic! (And if I read Babylon 5, I would absolutely read Lochley. I liked her.)

I'm slightly puzzled that anyone could think Ace (who is the only Old Who companion apart from Jo I know in greater capacity) had done nothing but screaming, but maybe this is the same as articles denouncing female characters in the LOTR movies as passive and then conveniently forgetting Eowyn?

As for the rest: having seen The Five Doctors, I actually liked Tegan quite a lot - I take it Sarah Jane wasn't quite her usual self in that episode? - and Romana simply sounds very interesting.

Regarding Who companion images - I rather support [livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj's theory that it all comes down to today's dominant journalistic generation being at prime Who-viewing age in the era of the largely-useless Peri and Mel, and giving up before Ace turned up.

...does that make it what's-his-name's fault, Eric Seward or something? (He who chided Colin Baker for not having been macho enough as Bayban the Butcher in B7.)

Should you be motivated to read B5 fic, one day, I wrote quite a lot of it, though sadly she's just in one of the stories; my fannish contributions are mostly Centauri-centric, or dealing with Bester.

Probably. [livejournal.com profile] londonkds below postulates it's Peri-and-Mel fallout.

Sarah Jane: no, she wasn't. For Sarah Jane, you must watch her very first storyarc, Time Warrior (script by Robert Holmes, which is usually fun); she's also in good form in Genesis of the Daleks, which is one of the Old School classics anyway (though strangely the one where the Doctor feels almost like an afterthought, though one could argue he and the Timelords start the Time War there...), Terry Nation at his best.

Barbara: oh yes. Though have you seen [livejournal.com profile] calapine's vids about the Companions? She's in those, splendidly so.

Eric Saward, possibly. Although Saward has claimed that he wanted to make Tegan more genuinely competent instead of just mouthy, but that Nathan-Turner wouldn't let him.

And it wasn't Bayban not being macho enough exactly, more being too noisy and silly and not coldly sadistic and ruthless.

D'oH!

You ask some interesting questions here about 5 very intriguing characters.

Locke. I wouldn't touch with a bargepole, because as soon as I think I have him nailed along comes the "oh he lived in a commune" or something else completely off-base. But you're right, maybe he's overlooked because of age-ism pure and simple. I notice that Tom Zarek (From Battlestar) is getting lots of squee, but that's because he's paired with Roslin, a woman of his own age. And also the Hatch-as-former-pretty-biy thing. He's also slashed with Apollo. Maybe it's because we haven't seen Locke with too many potential love-interests, which seems to be the flavour of the month with fics. Maybe I'm reading the wrong fics I dunno.

As for hanson - there's so much potential there. You're right, why aren't we writing fics about her chasing Sylar, tracking down Ted. there is so much more to go on rather than just a simple pining after Matt which doesn't interest me as a writer.

Lochley. I raise my hand to this. Yes, I hated how she came in and replaced a character that I loved. One of us was replaced by one of them.... maybe enough time has passed now for people to start re-evaluting her character. Hey, if people can love Garibaldi who wasn't exactly on the side of the angels....

Never heard of the other two, but they sound interesting....

Locke is my favorite LOST character too. I made one of my friends (who doesn't like him) write a story about him and it turned out pretty good. Don't know if you've read this one or not, but I thought I'd share:

Also, have you read the on-line Heroes graphic novels at NBC.com? They had a bit about Audrey in one of them that I thought was interesting. They're totally outside the plots of the tv show episodes themselves.

Oh, that's a great rendition of this iconic moment. Thanks for the link!

Online comics: I've read some of them, but not all. Not the one with Audrey in it - which story was it?
