Back for the weekend
Oct. 20th, 2007 05:30 pmLast two days: led to the conclusion that while the landscape of Lower Saxonia is charming, the lack of online connections in various hotels is not, and that I'm far too addicted and spoiled by technology, obviously. Thank good for libraries. Also, considering I have to travel the next week as well, I dearly hope the strike our train folk are currently engaged in won't continue.
And what's the first thing I see now that I'm back? A certain wizard got outed. Colour me amused. Because, really, was there anyone who read Deathly Hallows and didn't conclude Albus/Gellert was the new Xavier/Magneto?? Otherwise, I'm with
penknife; hand me the popcorn, I'll watch fandom flail and alternately condemm JKR for not making it explicit in text or being delighted there's a useful quote around. Because you know, for every "I don't care what the author says outside of the books, it's not canon", there is that strange phenomenon of endless posts and essays being written arguing against quotes from interviews and other non-canonical material. (Which I never understood. I mean, I'm all for "only what's on screen/in the books/insert appropriate place is canon", but then why all the growling or praising over personal statements? Pick one or the other.)
Wait, I can't afford to sit back and watch. I've got massive catching up to do and challenges to write. Damm!

Date: 2007-10-20 06:29 pm (UTC)*facepalm* A writer putting these two expressions together would have been embarrassing, but a journalist who does it should be ashamed.
And yes, it wasn't the happiest love story ever.
Having now read a few enraged posts, I am wondering if those guys read a different book than I did, because the relationship between Grindelwald and Dumbledore did seem pretty, well, "Cambridge crush."
(Of course I also thought that Sirius and Lupin came across as a couple.)
And I'm very glad to hear you do!
*beams* I just thought you would like feedback.

Date: 2007-10-20 06:34 pm (UTC)See, I actually wonder if the journalist did it on purpose...so as to implicate that the affair was more of an unconsumated crush. In fact, I wonder if most US journalists will soften the statement in this way.

Date: 2007-10-20 07:27 pm (UTC)Me too. I laughed my head off. I thought the implication in the book was pretty strong but I must admit I was quite surprised she came right out and said it.
I've got massive catching up to do and challenges to write.
Best of luck. I should actually manage to reply to your email tomorrow if things go to plan!

Date: 2007-10-21 05:37 am (UTC)But yes, Dumbledore/Grindlewald was really pretty obvious in the text.

Date: 2007-10-21 06:28 am (UTC)Word. It certainly seems like the biggest outrage is coming from those who have previously said "I don't caaaare about ANYTHING she says, it's all worthless..."
I approach JKR's interviews like I do deleted scenes from a film/TV show: if I see some element in it that I want to steal/borrow for a fic, cool - but on the other hand, I don't consider myself obligated to have my fic iron-cladly comply with the material of that deleted scene. I'm heartily amused at this new Dumbledore tidbit largely because JKR is one of the last creators I expected to officially "out" one of her main characters, even in a pseudo-canon sense. (The absolute last is George Lucas.) Joss Whedon she ain't. ;)
