Because there is no insanity like Harry Potter fandom insanity: wonderfully biting summary of the lexicon idiocy so far by [livejournal.com profile] legionseagle. God, the stupid, it burns. (On the part of the defence, naturally.)

Writer's Strike Talk:

Joss Whedon

Damon Lindelof

Ron Moore

Brian K. Vaughan

...what happened in HP fandom? Is there a five-sentence summary somewhere?

Check out [livejournal.com profile] legionseagle's post. She includes that summary (and also links to others at the start).

I did; didn't get it in a quick read and don't have the time to follow links.

Will catch up post-Exam; don't worry!

I've been very out of touch with HP fandom but I can't say it surprises me much. There's weird shit in that there fandom...

This reminds me of the German guys who wanted to make a Warhammer 40K film and spent several thousand Euros on it before bothering to find out if Games Workshop wanted to buy it. To oversimplify a complex story, when it turned out that the response was no, and GW pointed out that they would have to defend their imprint if they tried to release it, they carried on making it, and now appear to be in a situation where they can't even give it away.

Yes, that's exactly the same kind of foolishness. Ever since I heard about, I tell myself it has to be a spoof, people can't be that stupid, but yes, they really can sometimes...

What, exactly is the issue with this Potter book? Surely there are loads of unofficial episode guides and so forth to TV series that don't run into this kind of IP dispute? Is it because the original material is prose? Or does it contain too much direct quotation of source?

Thanks for the links to the writers. They make, as would be expected, a convincing case. Do I watch a Fox or a SciFi show? No, I watch a Ron Moore or Aaron Sorkin Show.

The problem (http://cleolinda.livejournal.com/544794.html), added to which is now that WB finally got to see an excerpt from the lexicon, the Snape article, and yes, it consists almost entirely of direct quotes from the novels.

Another summary of events (http://cleolinda.livejournal.com/544794.html) - more enlightening?

Well that's both infringing and lazy.

Huh. Someone compiled an HP lexicon, another single someone wants to publish it against a) the will of JKR, b) the interests of the majority of fen, and c) common sense?
