Easter Wells

Happy Easter to everyone who celebrates it. We followed family tradition and visited our Franconian Easter Wells again, which are extremely pretty, despite the fact the winter came back with a vengeance and so there is snow on the painted eggs. But have a look, even if you don't care for the holiday at all, I promise prettiness!

Every village here in Upper Franconia really comes up with its own variation, and attention to detail pays off:

*admiring your icon* Is this Mozart's Queen of the Night?

Oh, this reminds me to point you in the direction of a double Queen of the Night post by [livejournal.com profile] chickenfeet2003 (http://chickenfeet2003.livejournal.com/849427.html)!

Thank you! I don't think so, I just did a Google Image search for "Hekate" and liked this one that popped up, heh.

Thanks so much! I'll tell my half-German sons to look at those!

*beams* You're welcome.

[identity profile] angeyja.livejournal.com 2008-03-23 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Just wow.. are some of the eggs hand painted?

[identity profile] selenak.livejournal.com 2008-03-23 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, they are! Either by school classes or by local groups specialising in that kind of thing. There is usually a small plate somewhere announcing who did this year's easter eggs...

[identity profile] kskitten.livejournal.com 2008-03-23 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
The amount of eggs baffles me a little.

Happy Eater to you too!

You Prussians just don't understand our Franconian egg-ridden soul.*g*

*giggle*

(from a Frenchwoman who could not get away with the "Prussians" crack...)

[livejournal.com profile] kskitten lives in Berlin. That makes her as genuinenly Prussian as is possible many decades after Prussia was dissolved, and it's the traditional right of the South German to call everyone who doesn't live in Bavaria a Prussian anyway.*g*

Quite right.

Oh, come to think of it, do you know this marvellous movie (http://www.amazon.de/Life-Death-Colonel-Blimp-UK/dp/B00006424A/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1206315964&sr=1-2)? It's the most fantastic thing to be made in 1943 Britain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Life_and_Death_of_Colonel_Blimp). (And in colour!) You made me think of it because the beginning is set in Berlin.

These are so lovely! Are the eggs fresh dyed every year, or blown and used several years in a row? I can't imagine doing all of them from scratch each year!

[identity profile] selenak.livejournal.com 2008-03-23 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Both. About a thousand eggs each year break and have to be replaced by new ones - remember, those wells are all outside and thus vulnerable to strong winds or stupid people - but of course the other ones are reused.

They're gorgeous! Although, for some reason, I'm partial to the purple.

Thank you for sharing and have a Happy Easter!

...I cannot help but quote Londo Mollari (of Babylon 5), who said while being very drunk: "You're cute, in an annoying sort of way. Everyone is cute. Even I am cute. BUT IN PURPLE, I AM STUNNING!"

These are always so pretty but I think they look even prettier in the snow. I love the blue flower ones and the bunnies are adorable (though possibly Anya wouldn't agree).

[identity profile] selenak.livejournal.com 2008-03-23 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, but Anya's previous self, Aud, would.*g* The snow does add something. But some suneshine would be nice!

[identity profile] londonkds.livejournal.com 2008-03-23 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooo, gorgeous. We had snow this morning, but it turned to rain and melted quickly.

[identity profile] selenak.livejournal.com 2008-03-23 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Rainy snow is the worst of both worlds! But on the other hand, it also means you're closer to genuine spring than we are...

Wow! (and BRRRRRRRR! looks velly velly cold) So pretty! Happy Easter!

(and OMG are these giant CHOCOLATE bunnies?)

[identity profile] selenak.livejournal.com 2008-03-23 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they aren't. Remember, those bunnies are outside, where everyone can touch them - I doubt chocolate bunnies would have survived long!

Amazing and beautiful; so much detailed work! The rabbit school looks as if it dates back to at least the 19th century.

I wish we had such lovely customs.

You have some of the most magnificent landscapes in the world instead, so it all balances out.*g*
