Bountiful Bali, Part II

selenakBefore I get to the pretty part, I would be much obliged if someone collected interesting fanfic links for me until I get back (23rd)? I might miss out all the best stuff otherwise.
Now, onto more pictures from this beautiful island.
The Taman Gili of Klumgung, which is extremely pretty.
It also has gorgeous ceilings in its pavillons.
The subject of these paintings? Punishment and reward in the hereafter. This would be why the name translates as justice, or not. Have some details:
Now, the next temple we visited was the Goah Lawa, which translates as Sea Mountain, as it's between both. It's also known as the Bat Temple. Everyone who cremates their dead ones has to come here one month later to pray and send the spirit of the deceased on his/her way. You'll see more of the ceremony in a while, as this is a good month for cremation. Rich people have their deceased cremated immediately, poor ones can't afford the pomp, so a village typically waits and saves money for five years and then they cremate everyone (who until then has been put in the ground, but now gets dug up again) in style. And then they go to the Bat Temple. Which is named after the bat cave it's build in front of. More about it in a moment, but first, some temple, build of volcanic stone:
Now, the bat cave. All allusions to a certain DC character you'll have to make on your own, I'm dead exhausted. These bats number in millions, and aren't allowed to be harmed within the cave. (Outside, they're free game.) Humans are only allowed to walk up to 50 metres inside the cave on two holidays a year. Oh, and there's also a python.
In front of the temple is the beach where people go for the post cremation ceremony. Luckily, one just ended when we were there. Also, I asked our guide who said photographs were allowed, so:
Next, we went to Tintagannga, which is a water palace one of the last princes build for himself. Hails from 1947, looks much older.
And my Aged Parents, whom I love and adore and whose 40th wedding anniversary trip this is:
Most of the local Rajahs fought for their independence. One didn't and allied with the Dutch instead. This kept him and his descendants in power and also paid in terms of buildings. This is nicknamed Makerdam:
In the garden, there was a cockfight. Which is very popular sport in Bali, sad to say, but there you go:
En route to our next destination, there was a lot of time to admire the scenery:
And to observe rice being harvested:
Then we were at Pura Kehen, which is one of the oldest temples around:
and lastly, more countryside in its striking beauty, even if it HAD started to rain:
I nicknamed this next one, which is the oldest statue on the island (ca. one millennium) Discworld, for reasons obvious if you've read the novels and too complicated to explain otherwise:
