Busy real life makes for links instead of lengthy ramblings, so:
Doctor Who:
Let's forget we're running (out of time): now, this is a Donna post-Journey's End story which includes several elements that I usually wouldn't go for, but does them in such an anti-cliché way that I was thrilled instead. To wit: one of the most appealing things about the Doctor-Donna relationship to me in s4 was that while they adored each other she really wasn't in love with him, that they were friends and not wannabe lovers. Which isn't to say that I begrudge anyone their Doctor/Donna romance stories, just that I normally wouldn't look for it when hunting for stories to read. In this story, however, there is a sexual interlude which ends with Donna realizing this isn't what she wants from him. And they're still friends after. As I said, anti-cliché. It's also a story that brings back Lee, Donna's husband from the Library episodes, who does strike me as sweet enough to say yes when the Doctor, having tracked him down, asks him to come to 21st century earth to give it another shot with an at this point still amnesiac Donna. The Donna/Lee'ship that develops is a convincing extension of what we saw on screen, and Lee himself is adorable. The way Donna reacts to what the Doctor did once she does regain her memories - with a monster of the week type of plot to explain it - struck me as ic and a great medium between instant rejection and instant forgiveness/aceptance. Best of all? Donna gets to make the choice of where the three of them go from there. There is plot, good ocs, and Donna is magnificent both without and with her memories. Onwards, readers!
Battlestar Galactica
If you're not an Adama/Roslin 'shipper, this is the week of Gaeta. Hence:
Good meta on Gaeta's arc through the show.
Nothing good ever is: backstory for Gaeta pre-show.
A prayer for Felix Gaeta: Gaius Baltar looks back.
And a non-Gaeta story:
All the people we need to love and hate: Sam Anders on the Cylon basestar in late 4.0, trying to come to terms with his past and present. I love the way Sam's backstory on Caprica, on New Caprica and his relationship with Kara is all connected her and triggered by his moment of empathy with the Eight in Guess what's coming to dinner.
