Date: 2009-03-06 10:51 pm (UTC)I didn't read the review b/c I'm trying to avoid spoilers (which really makes little sense, but I haven't heard exactly how the ending was changed, so I may as well preserve that). I'm actually surprised how reasonable, if mixed, the overall reaction has been so far. I've only come across a handful of fanboys claiming it ruined their lives, and only read one thoroughly snotty mainstream review (and it was Anthony Lane, the New Yorker critic who is equally snotty about Star Wars, Star Trek, and basically anything based on a comic book that's not American Splendor). I feel like all the buildup got people ready to have fairly reasonable reactions. Maybe fandom was pre-wanked out. . .
In any event, until I've seen the movie, I can just share that there was a conversation this afternoon about Marvel Universe characters having a book club, at which they discussed Watchmen. Jean Grey loved Dan & Laurie without irony and hated everyone else, Tony was busy trying to improve on Ozymandias's grand scheme, Steve was DISTURBED by Tony trying to improve Ozymandias's scheme and meanwhile wondered where all the nice heroes were, and Henry Hellrung was stuck mounting a theoretical defense of Ozy's plan. Wolverine napped in the corner, then surprised everybody by chirping in with a comment that indicated he had actually read and understood the whole thing pretty well. Then he went back to sleep.
