Fanfic links, and fannish debates
Jan. 23rd, 2004 02:57 pmFinished the first season of Six Feet Under. Truly a well-written, well-acted show. Are there any lj fans?
While waiting till someone else downloads Soul Purpose, I found two great new stories about last year's boy, Connor, and, inevitably, his parents. True Faces is about Connor and Holtz, and Connor and Angel; Connor trying to come to terms with what the loved of his two fathers did to him in early season 4. This story, otoh, is about fifth season Connor of the lost memories, and his unknown mother. I am a sucker for any story which brings Connor and Darla together, and this one, well-written like everything Viola does, keeps just the right balance of bittersweet.
Meanwhile, over at
theatrical_muse, we have some great new arrivals - a Sikozu (yay for more Farscape characters!), and
mr_morden. Naturally,
londo_mollari is already sparring with him, when he isn't talking about patriotism and guilt with
legate_damar, of DS9 fame. (You know, before it never struck me Damar had that much in common with Londo.)
searose had some fascinating thoughts about genderswap in Farscape for a fanfic story - i.e. Farscape with every male as a female, and every female character as a male, and why it just doesn't work, here. It's interesting to speculate about other shows/movies/books in this regard. (And let's ignore the respective creators for a moment, since every creator has his or her reasons for writing these boys and girls as just that.) For example, you could genderswap the Harry Potter characters without losing the crucial dynamics of the story. But you couldn't do it with the BTVS characters, or the AtS characters, which makes for a strange counterpoint to the fact gender roles are far more fluid in the Jossverse than they ever could be in the HPverse. Star Wars? Hm. Might make for an interesting and subversive fanfic or two. Young prince Leius and experienced smuggler Hanna Solo would go against the social conditioning of the audience; otoh, a female Anakin separated from her father and forbidden to love Senator Amidalus would sound dreadfully like a gender stereotype. On the other other hand, a female Palpatine sounds deliciously like Servalan, and the dynamic between her and a female Anakin suddenly looks a bit like Mayor Wilkins and Faith, if Wilkins had been female.
And I'm really trying not to recast Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan with Lucy Lawless and Renée O'Connor...
