The Good Wife 2.01.
Sep. 29th, 2010 08:51 pmOr, the show of many interesting women, political intrigues and trials is back.
As is my wont, I'll start with what I wasn't so keen on, which in this episode was basically only one thing: Eli deleting Will's second voicemail was the kind of cheap plot device to prolong an UST situation this show is usually above. Not that it's ooc for Eli, mind, but it just screams of wanting to keep an Will-Alicia-Peter triangle going instead of resolving the situation by letting Alicia make a choice, and I'm not cool with that. (Also? Will's mighty declaration of love was totally beside the point Alicia made earlier when she told him that she got the romance but needed a plan. Maybe my bias against Will is talking, but I think this demonstrates why Will didn't really listen and isn't a good choice.)
On to all the squeeworthy rest. This show really loves to use the headlines, now complete with video footage leak on the internet. (BTW, thanks for the reminder. I think that story got way more headlines here in Germany than it got in the US.) The client of the week was a good case, neither an innocent lamb nor a creep despite being guilty, we had another reminder that this firm represents the guilty as well as the innocent, and Alicia got to be awesome in court, both in quiet and confrontational ways. Cary got to be competent as well, and I'm glad that so far they haven't vilified him because he and Alicia are on opposite sides now. And we got the first oral-sex-is-great scene I saw since Joss Whedon's various shows ended (both BTVS and AtS were virtual advertisments for the joys of oral sex, verily - without looking it up, Spike/Buffybot, Buffy/Spike, Willow/Tara and Wesley/Lilah most memorably). Clever show. It was clear Peter was very turned on by watching Alicia kick ass at court, but I was a bit concerned that the ensueing marital come-on would have overtones of dominance. However, instead of going the "you were great, let me take you now" route, they went the "you were great, let me make you feel good" route. Again, clever show. (Peter isn't stupid, either, given the uncertain state of relationship.)
It's odd, I can't stand Will whenever he shares scenes with Alicia, but I really like the scenes with him and Diane, and now their new partner. All the different layers of them, and the wavering power balance, going from Will and Diane plotting how to play the newbie to that last image of Diane wondering whether she's just seen the first step to the establishment of a boys' club from which she'll be included. All very nicely done, and so was our new partner, who looks like an interesting character.
Speaking of new characters, I didn't quite get whether what's his name, the other p.i., was just being a jerk towards Kalinda (i.e. pretended to have forgotten her name) or whether he was playing power games (i.e. he found out Kalinda really isn't her name and what he called her is). Looks like we'll get him as a parallel to Alicia and Cary last season, which should be interesting. Also a way to make Kalinda avoid looking too good to be true (i.e. she'll outmaneouvre him in the end but won't always beat him).
Loved the Eli and Jackie scene. This should be interesting.
Poor Grace. First she gets dragged to boring get together and then the political opposition sicks a boy on her to get a statement on her parents' sex life. On the other hand, I'm proud that she caught on pretty quickly, since she didn't get the benefit of Eli's earlier exposition about the latest tricks in smear campaigns.
In conclusion: my show is back, hooray!
