Furthwängler and U2 (strange combu#ination ;-) )
Date: 2004-02-08 01:30 am (UTC)Incidentally, have you ever seen Taking Sides?
I have seen it in London many years ago. I remember it to be an interesting play as far as the political aspects are concerned, but also because it reflects the experience especially of my family in the respect that Furthwängler really opened up classical music for a young generation in Germany. Do you know if they have made a movie from the play?
btw, I have all 9 symphonies in Furthwängler recordings (EMI). Interested?
Somehow I missed out on U2 completely so far. With which CD should I start?
I do not know if I should recommend U2 at all any longer, the music being very much part of my teen life (I used to be a really bing fan, posters in my room and all that, but that wore of somewhat ;-).
Anyway, the "Joshua Tree" Album is the most famous one, and "Achtung Baby" is also a good starting point I guess.
And speaking of music: You asked me about Leonard Cohen some while ago: Again, rather part of my adolescence, but "New Skins for the old Ceremony" is a very good album still. (or, if you like it more sentimental, the very first one of 1968, songs of Leonard Cohen ;-)).
And one advice: Never ask me about music, next to cinema it is one of the topics that really get me talking ;-))
